What horrible timing.

In less than an afternoon’s time, the entire ophthalmology department knew that Scarlet was getting a divorce. For anyone who didn’t believe her, they just had to take a look at her swollen eyes.

Clementine was the happiest when she heard the news. She looked at Scarlet with a huge smile on her face. “Hey. I heard your ugly husband finally dumped you.”

Scarlet didn’t know what Clementine was so happy about.

“Why are you so excited?” Scarlet asked mildly as she ate her lunch. “Even my husband’s mistress wasn’t as excited.”

The people in the cafeteria burst into laughter. Clementine was almost beside herself with anger.

She probably ran off to complain to Jeremy, as he ended up calling Scarlet into his office for a talking–to. “Let’s leave our private lives out of the office. Not only are you affecting the patients, but you’re also affecting your colleagues‘ work.”

When Scarlet had just joined the company, Jeremy wasn’t the chief physician yet. At the time, Cameron Ambridge had been the chief physician.

The two of them just couldn’t get along. The whole ophthalmology department was split into two factions. Cameron was a good doctor and had a great reputation. Meanwhile, even though Jeremy held a lower position, he was distantly related to the hospital director and had valuable connections.

Scarlet and Clementine had joined the hospital around the same time. Clementine was also a relative of the hospital director, so she was naturally closer to Jeremy.

It was Scarlet’s first job, and she didn’t understand the office politics happening within the hospital. Cameron thought highly of her and praised her a few times. Because of that, she had become a pain in Jeremy’s neck.

She hadn’t done anything, but she had already been forced into taking sides.

However, Cameron eventually got a promotion and left the department, leaving the position open to Jeremy. So, Scarlet had been the target of Jeremy’s temper over the last two years. He always found a way to nitpick at whatever she did.

However, since she was in an equally bad mood, she stopped controlling herself and argued back, “Maybe you should check the cameras and see whether I was the one who brought up my private life.

“I don’t care if the patients gossip among themselves, but you can teach Clementine not to gossip so much. Also, tell her that it’s rude to pay so much attention to somebody else’s relationship.”

Jeremy snapped, “Scarlet, what’s with the attitude?”

“I’ve been respectful this whole time. If you don’t think it’s good enough, should I start bowing while talking to you?”

When she was finally chased out of Jeremy’s office, she saw Xyla’s wheelchair zooming out of the corridor. Her wheels almost sparked from the speed at which she escaped.

Xyla had been avoiding her for the whole day out of guilt. They only met when Scarlet went to give her an eye checkup. The results came back fine.

Xyla murmured an apology. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to yell so loudly.”

“Your apology is worth nothing to me,” Scarlet replied. She wasn’t actually mad. “You give me trouble every day, anyway.”

11

X CLOSE

Chapter 43

2/2

“Trouble? I’m just looking out for you!”

Xyla knew she had to take note of her surroundings this time. She looked around to check if the coast was clear before saying, “It’s good that you’re getting a divorce. Either way, you’re so unhappy with William.

“When you guys were arguing in the hospital last time, do you know how crushed you looked? Even I felt like crying when I saw you”

Scarlet coldly called her out. “Stop with the act. We fought because of you, remember?”

Xyla started fidgeting sheepishly. “I know I was wrong for that.”

As she spoke, she suddenly became determined about something. “Just get a divorce.
