While I cherish her as my brother’s only child, my love for our son and daughter is greater. How could I allow her to marry into the wealthiest family in Wiltspoon?”

“Don’t even consider having Carrie marry into the Yorks; she doesn’t stand a chance. Setting everything else aside, our conflict with Mr. and Mrs. York makes it impossible for their other bachelors to be interested in her. At only twenty, Carrie isn’t in a rush to marry.”

“What we need to do is find a way to get her out first.”

Mr. and Mrs. Newman walked to the couch and sat down. Mrs. Newman asked, “How can we save her? We’ve humbled ourselves and apologized, but none of it has worked. We initially found someone to mediate, but Mr. Callum ruined that.”

“Darling, does Mr. Callum even recognize that man is from the Marshalls? He is a Marshall, but he’s their fifth cousin. If he’s identified, the Marshalls will take action against him.”

“His family is five degrees removed from Old Mr. Marshall’s lineage; although he’s wealthy, he has little influence in their family. Mr. Callum probably wouldn’t even recognize him. The Yorks are only connected to the Marshalls’ direct descendants, so they might not know anyone from the collateral branches.” Mr. Newman continued, “Let’s not panic. When they start investigating, we’ll place all the blame on the bodyguard. He must leave Wiltspoon tomorrow.”

Mrs. Newman responded, “Understood. Now, how can we maintain a connection with Mr. Callum?”

“Since he saved Camryn, let her repay him by getting close to him. The Yorks definitely wouldn’t want a…

“She’s just like her daughter-in-law. When the time comes, we can discuss our plan to bail Carrie out. Once she’s free, we won’t need to bother Mr. Callum any longer,” Mr. Newman replied.

“That woman won’t agree to help. She’s eager for Carrie to be sentenced. Besides, what if the Yorks are okay with that woman being involved with Mr. Callum?”

Mr. Newman responded, “She’s blind… How could Mr. Callum marry her? Just persuade her tomorrow and stop calling her names. After all, you gave birth to her. If you insult her, you’re essentially insulting yourself.”

Mrs. Newman pouted and said, “Every time I see her, I see her father. I can’t help but loathe her; sometimes I wish she were gone so she could join him. I should have been tougher back then and just ended her life. It would have been easy when she was only two.”

“I’ve told you not to talk like that anymore. She’s my brother’s only child, and she’s blind, so she poses no threat to us. Once Carrie is out, we can marry her off to someone else, and that will be the end of it.”

Mr. Newman had allowed Camryn to stay back then because he believed she was just a girl who wouldn’t amount to much and wouldn’t pose a threat to him. Moreover, Camryn was the daughter of the woman he had loved the most. She resembled his brother and sister-in-law, which made him fond of her as well. Mr. Newman couldn’t bring himself to be cruel to the innocent child who sweetly called him her uncle.

“Our room is soundproof. This house is under our control, so why should we fear her eavesdropping? I can hardly wait to see her gone!”

“If your younger sister hadn’t suddenly returned to visit ten years ago, Camryn would have ended up in the hospital and would have died long ago.”

“Fortunately, her eyes were injured, resulting in her blindness. She poses no threat to us now.”

Ten years ago, Mrs. Newman discovered that Camryn appeared to be suspicious of her late ex-husband’s death and was secretly gathering evidence. This prompted her to take cruel actions against Camryn.

Little did she know, her sister-in-law returned for a visit and intervened to help Camryn.

If Camryn’s eyes had not been harmed, she likely would not have survived.

“Alright, let’s drop this topic. It’s getting late. Please go remove your makeup and get some rest,” Mr. Newman said, wanting to avoid further discussion about the past. He stood up to leave but noticed Camryn’s cane in the corner. “Why is Camryn’s cane in our room?”

“I invited her in to assist with her makeup, but when she tried to leave with the cane, I kicked it away and left it here,” Mrs. Newman replied as she walked over, picked up Camryn’s white cane, and headed to the door to throw it outside.

There were no more conversations that night.

Serenity did not wake until the sun was up.

After rubbing her eyes and stretching, she sat up but was met with a headache.

    <i class="icon
