The Hunt family stood in stunned silence. <\/p>\n

After exchanging glances, Mike spoke up, \u201cSerenity, talk it over with your sister and propose a price. Just sell the house to us.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cIf we decide to sell it, will it be you or our grandparents making the payment?\u201d <\/p>\n

Mike replied, \u201cSince our grandparents are living in the house, they will be the ones paying. However, they don\u2019t have much in savings after Grandmom fell ill. We all contributed to her medical expenses, so they might struggle to pay a large sum at once.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cYou could have them sign an IOU. They can pay you whatever they can now, and if that\u2019s not enough\u2026\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cCan they really owe you money?\u201d <\/p>\n

Serenity couldn\u2019t help but question, \u201cThey\u2019re elderly and lack a source of income. How can they afford to buy a house?\u201d <\/p>\n

Mike fell silent. <\/p>\n

Old Mr. Hunt glared at his grandsons. <\/p>\n

Mike added, \u201cGranddad wants to give Uncle Scott\u2019s house to John. If we\u2019re purchasing it, then John should pay for it. This way, there won\u2019t be any objections when John inherits the house.\u201d <\/p>\n

John interjected, \u201cI already own a house in town and don\u2019t need another one. If Granddad has property, I want a share. If he doesn\u2019t, I won\u2019t pay. Granddad may have brought my dad into this world, but he didn\u2019t bring me into it. The responsibility of buying a house for Granddad\u2019s retirement isn\u2019t mine.\u201d <\/p>\n

Old Mr. Hunt fumed upon hearing this.<\/p>\n

His most cherished grandson had remarked. Liberty and Serenity were aware of their relatives\u2019 lack of shame, yet they still felt appalled. John, feeling unashamed, spoke up, \u201cWhy don\u2019t you contribute to letting our grandparents stay in the house too, Serenity? At most, you could ask them to pay some rent. Rental prices in rural areas aren\u2019t high\u2014typically around three to four hundred dollars a month. Our grandparents can manage that amount.\u201d The others nodded in agreement. <\/p>\n

However, Old Mr. Hunt interjected, \u201cYour grandmother and I need to save our money for retirement. You all should cover the rent. Don\u2019t tell me you can\u2019t afford it. Both of you have families, so surely you can manage a couple of hundred dollars a month for rent?\u201d He glared at his two sons, reprimanding them, \u201cYour mother and I raised you all when you were young. Although Scott passed away early, you two had a comfortable life.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cWhen Scott and his wife died, your mother and I faced a lot of criticism just to access the insurance payout. And who did we give it to? We gave it to you so you could have the capital to start your own business. It\u2019s thanks to us that you\u2019ve enjoyed a good life.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cCan\u2019t you support us in our old age now? Liberty, Serenity, you two will purchase the land that was allocated to us.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cYour grandmother and I will continue living in the house, and the rent and electricity will be divided equally among your three uncles. You just need to collect the rent from them. Ten years ago, we signed an agreement stating that you wouldn\u2019t have to support us while we were alive or handle our burial when we passed. We will honor that agreement. You don\u2019t have to worry about us. I still have three sons and several grandchildren. I\u2019m not concerned about not having someone to bury me when my time comes.\u201d <\/p>\n

In truth, Old Mr. Hunt felt a bit hurt. He had many children and grandchildren who all lived well.<\/p>\n

They shared their lives, but when it came time to support him and his wife in their old age, the family shifted the responsibility among themselves, claiming they could not afford to care for the elderly couple. In their earlier years of poverty, he and his wife successfully raised four sons and two daughters. Unfortunately, none of their sons or grandchildren are able to assist them now that they are older. \u201cWhat is the cost per square foot of land there?\u201d Serenity inquired.<\/p>\n
