Did you bother your uncle?”

“I’ve been a good boy… but I wet my pants, Mom,” Sonny replied, a hint of embarrassment in his voice.

Liberty asked, “Were you sitting anywhere?”

“On Uncle’s bed,” he said.

Liberty was left speechless.

“Dunc bought me lots of new clothes and a dress. We can save the dress for Aunt Ser’s baby girl!” Sonny added enthusiastically.

Liberty struggled to find words.

Duncan had actually shopped for her son, and included a dress in the mix.

How clueless could he be to buy a dress for a boy?

Unfazed, Duncan approached and handed the bag of clothes to Liberty. You can give me fifteen hundred.”

Glancing at the bag of clothes, Liberty realized Duncan wasn’t a bargain shopper. It made sense that everything would add up to nearly two thousand dollars if he was browsing the new arrivals section.

She opened her purse and took out fifteen hundred dollars to give to Duncan. “This is for the clothes, Mr. Lewis,” she said.

With one hand occupied holding Sonny, Duncan accepted the money with his free hand and tucked it into his pocket without counting it.

As they walked out of the office building, Duncan asked, “Are you sure you don’t need a lift?”

“We’re good. Then, he walked to his car.

Ring, ring, ring…

His phone rang.

Seeing it was Zachary, Duncan picked up as he walked. “Aren’t you in a meeting, Zachary?”

“Can’t I take a break for some water? Why didn’t you drive my sister-in-law and Sonny home?”

Zachary was still at his office, unwilling to admit he was being nosy. With a pair of binoculars, he peered through his window and saw his sister-in-law leaving with Sonny. He wanted to scold his best friend for missing the chance to help.

“Liberty rode her bike here; she doesn’t need a lift. Besides, I’m not free. I have to rush to Wiltspoon Hotel for a meeting with a client.”

Zachary was speechless.

“Your sister-in-law paid me for the clothes,” Duncan added.

Feeling uneasy, Zachary asked, “Paid for what?”

“For the clothes I bought for Sonny. I know you have a wife, and your family isn’t pressuring you to get married.”

Married, but mine is. Yet here you are, making such a crude remark.
