Duncan would not involve himself in Zachary’s matters, as he was merely Zachary’s best friend.

“I understand.”

Duncan cast a brief glance at the items in the shopping cart. Zachary’s wife clearly took her visit to Zachary’s home seriously, as she had purchased many nice things. “Sonny.”

As usual, Duncan attempted to play with Sonny.

Sonny turned his head away before Duncan could reach for his hand, asking Liberty to hold him instead.

Knowing her son was afraid of Duncan, Liberty complied and picked him up.

“Sonny, I gave you a pinwheel. Why are you still afraid of me?”

Sonny wrapped his arms around his mother’s neck and buried his head against her shoulder, avoiding Duncan’s gaze.

Did Mr. Lewis think a pinwheel would win him over?

Sonny was not so easily swayed.

As if he would fall for that ploy.

“Come on, Sonny. Let me carry you to find more beautiful pinwheels.”

Duncan tried to take Sonny from Liberty.

Sonny resisted, crying, “No, I want Mom. No Mr. Lewis. No pinwheel.”

He had broken the pinwheel Mr. Lewis gave him and left the pieces on the ground. Mom had swept the broken pinwheel away while cleaning the house.

Once he had experienced the pinwheel, Sonny no longer found it appealing. Feeling guilty, Liberty said to Duncan, “I’m sorry, Mr. Lewis. Sonny’s still scared of you.”

Duncan had never shown any malice during his encounters with the mother and son, even during their first meeting when Liberty had scratched his car. However, Sonny trembled at the sight of Duncan.

Sonny firmly refused to let Duncan hold him.

Touching the scar on his face, Duncan asked, “Is my scar really that frightening? My mom said it might make children cry.”

He found it hard to believe,

Sonny’s reaction was a rude awakening for Duncan. His presence frightened young children. After all these years, the scar on his face was no longer as terrifying as it once was, but perhaps his tall stature and rugged demeanor still kept Sonny at a distance. Liberty studied the scar and noted, “People can get used to it.” Although subtle, Duncan could read between the lines; his scar was not a pleasant sight. Nonetheless, he was not offended by her comment. He smiled and replied, “Yes, you’re right. People will get used to it. Sonny just isn’t accustomed to it yet. When will the renovations at your shop be finished?”

“Probably in March,” Liberty answered.

Duncan calculated the timeline and nodded. “Not long now. I’ll support your business once your breakfast place is ready. Sonny will get used to seeing me around and won’t be afraid of me.” Then, he would finally fulfill his wish to hug the little man.

Liberty was left speechless. She knew her son was adorable, but this was the first time a man had been so eager to be close to Sonny and hold him.

Serenity drove up to the entrance, with Hank right behind her. When Serenity saw Duncan standing with her sister, she was taken aback. She exited the car, greeted them, and asked, “Are you here to buy gifts, Mr. Lewis?”

Duncan replied with a grin, “No. The family butler will gather everything we need for the holidays, so we don’t have to worry about that. I was passing by when I noticed your sister and Sonny here, so I stopped to see if they needed a ride home with their purchases.”

Serenity glanced at her sister, sensing that fate was bringing Liberty and Duncan together, as they often seemed to cross paths. It felt like more than mere coincidence.

Chapter 766 Nonetheless, that was Zachary’s concern.
