You’ve met him before.”

Sonny simply stared at Duncan. Typically polite, he refused to greet Duncan.

“What a beautiful child,” Mrs. Lewis complimented.

While Mrs. Stone’s older niece was quite heavyset, her son was rather handsome.

“Duncan, your intimidating face scared the little guy. He won’t let you touch him,” Mrs. Lewis chided her youngest son.

Since the incident that left Duncan with a cut on his face, Mrs. Lewis had been urging him to undergo surgery to remove the scar and restore his looks.

However, the stubborn man refused to heed her advice. He showed little regard for his mother, who had nearly suffered a heart attack and spent many nights crying over the accident.

Years passed, and the scar remained.

The once handsome man now found himself single at thirty-five… Wait, Duncan was about to celebrate his thirty-sixth birthday.

While other men his age were already fathers of two or three children, there were no prospects for her thirty-six-year-old son.

Since it was rare for Duncan to engage with children, Mrs. Lewis took the opportunity to press him.

With a smile, Duncan replied, “It’s just that I’m not familiar with Sonny yet. He won’t be scared of me once we see each other more often.”

Mrs. Lewis frowned. “See each other more often?”

“Liberty rented one of my shops to transform into a breakfast place. I pass that area on my way to work, so Sonny will see me every day,” Duncan explained.

“Please excuse me, Mrs. Stone, while I say hello to your son.”

Clive and his wife were

receiving guests on the other end, meaning they were not with their mother. Mrs. Stone smiled and nodded as Duncan approached Clive. Mrs. Lewis glanced at Liberty a few times, but her intentions were far from friendly. Without offering any further comments to Liberty, Mrs. Lewis engaged in conversation with Mrs. Stone as they walked into the house.

Elisa waited until the two ladies were out of earshot before pulling Liberty aside. “Let’s pass the time here and head into the house later so my mom has plenty of time to discuss the challenges of raising children with her friends,” she suggested.

Liberty curled her lips and replied understandingly, “Sure.”

“I didn’t like the way Mrs. Lewis was looking at you, Liberty. Don’t take their stares to heart. With my mom around, they won’t dare try anything,” Elisa reassured her, recognizing Mrs. Lewis’s disapproval of her cousin.

Elisa noticed that as soon as Mrs. Lewis learned Liberty had a shop off Duncan to start a restaurant, her demeanor changed. It was as if Mrs. Lewis was wary of Liberty for having an interest in Duncan.

“Elisa, I’m used to that kind of look,” Liberty said, unfazed.

Although Liberty was one of the stars of the event tonight, it was merely for one night to connect with the upper crust of Wiltspoon. She planned to leave the Stones’ residence at dawn and return to her rented apartment. Liberty intended to gather materials to renovate her shop for a fresh look after the New Year’s holidays, keeping her busy with necessary purchases.

High society was not meant for Liberty. She saw no need to force herself into a circle where she didn’t belong, and she was fully aware of that. Aunt Audrey had money, but her wealth was unrelated to Liberty. Liberty was determined to depend on herself to create her own wealth.

“Live better days.”

“The thing is, Mrs. Lewis genuinely believes that you would pursue her son.”

As outspoken as she was, Elisa candidly expressed what was on Mrs. Lewis’s mind.

Liberty found Elisa’s anger somewhat amusing. “I’m not even angry, Elisa. I can see that too. The folks at Lewis & Co. also thought I was trying to get into Duncan’s pants, but who cares what they think? I just emerged from a nightmare, and I have no intention of rushing back into marriage.”

“Hank’s mother lives on a pension of three thousand dollars a month, and she isn’t easy to please. She constantly found faults with me. Getting along with Mrs. Lewis would be even tougher since she comes from privilege. It would be crazy for me to long for her son.”

The failed marriage offered Liberty valuable insights and a renewed perspective on life. She would think carefully before considering another marriage.

Chapter 681 Sonny flinched and hid behind his mother.
