Moreover, the elite Japanese attendees did not pique his interest at all. He wasn’t the type to seek favor with the powerful or form connections with the wealthy. To him, even the most influential Japanese dignitaries seemed trivial, especially since even members of the Rothschild family had to consider his opinions and mood.

Interestingly, despite the predominance of Japanese attendees, English was the common language spoken at the event. Even those with noticeable Japanese accents communicated in English and rarely used their native tongue. This surprised Charlie a bit, but he soon understood the rationale. Historically, the Japanese have admired Western culture, particularly that of the United States. Since the Meiji Restoration, adopting Western attire, cuisine, and language has been a hallmark of the influential class, making English the expected mode of communication at an event like this.

Sasaki Yukiko guided the trio around the venue, exchanging smiles and greetings with acquaintances, while introducing Charlie and the others.

Charlie noticed a subtle detail: the individuals Yukiko introduced them to were all outside the event’s inner circle. There was a core group of over a dozen people engaged in conversation in the heart of the venue. Sasaki Yukiko hesitated several times but ultimately refrained from taking the three towards that group.

Charlie speculated that Yukiko might not have the standing to approach those key figures. If she were to greet them alone, it would already be awkward, and bringing along a few unfamiliar faces would likely intensify that discomfort.

At that moment, a young woman in an elegant evening gown spotted Sasaki Yukiko, approached her with a smile, and remarked, “Sachiko, you seem to be running around like a headless chicken. Are you distributing business cards everywhere?”

Sasaki Yukiko glanced at her and replied somewhat stiffly, “Miki, I’m just introducing my friends to some familiar faces.”

“Your friends?” Miki asked, directing her gaze at Charlie Wade, then at Claire and Loreen. “I assume they aren’t Japanese?”

Though Japanese, Chinese, and Korean appearances may share similarities, a discerning observer can quickly identify the differences. Each nationality has distinct fashion traits that become apparent upon closer examination. Claire and Loreen, with their office lady style and light makeup, differed significantly from typical Japanese fashion. Charlie, who had no interest in grooming and hadn’t even shaped his eyebrows, was clearly not a local in the eyes of Japanese women. Regardless of whether local men were attractive or not, their eyebrows and hairstyles were typically well-maintained.

Sasaki Yukiko wanted to keep the conversation brief, so she responded, “Yes, my friends are all from China.”

Miki looked at Charlie Wade with curiosity and inquired, “What’s this gentleman’s name and where does he work?”

Charlie casually replied, “My last name is Wade, and my first name is Charlie Wade. I’m currently an unemployed vagrant, so I can’t claim to be successful anywhere.”

Miki regarded Charlie with surprise and then glanced at Claire, who was linked arm-in-arm with him. Even though their attire wasn’t overly formal and they weren’t adorned with ostentatious jewelry or watches, they exuded a certain charm, leading her to believe that he was someone of significance from China. She was taken aback by his self-description as an unemployed vagrant, which made her skeptical.

With a smile, she said, “Mr. Wade is quite humble. For this event, Sachiko and I received three invitations. Our families urged us to use them wisely to invite influential individuals with stature. Since Sachiko chose to invite you, I can’t help but feel there must be a notable background behind Mr. Wade.”

Charlie was somewhat surprised by Miki’s candidness; typically, such thoughts would be kept to oneself. He didn’t dwell on it, however, and simply responded, “I truly am a vagrant. Occasionally, I look into Feng Shui for others to earn some commissions. If Miss Miki has any interest in that, I’d be happy to assist.”

Miki realized that Charlie was not being modest after all.

She raised an eyebrow and playfully replied, “I’ve heard of Feng Shui. It’s often regarded as a superstition in China. There are similar Feng Shui practitioners in Japan, but most are from the lower class. The elite in Japan generally don’t subscribe to these imported beliefs.”

She then turned to Claire and asked, “May I ask what this lady does?”

Claire answered, “I run my own design studio, which just recently opened.”

Miki inquired, “A design studio? Is it located in China?”

“Yes,” Claire confirmed, “It’s in Aurous Hill.”

Miki assumed Claire was a well-known designer in China, but she was surprised to learn that Claire’s studio was in Aurous Hill, a second-tier city. Miki wouldn’t have considered a prominent design studio from such a place, let alone a fledgling female designer starting out in a lesser-known city.

Tawana Sweet’s fame brought a significant crowd to her concert in Tokyo, drawing not only a plethora of affluent Japanese […]

[19

post-10560","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-the-amazing-son-in-law-the-charismatic-charlie-wade
["GET
