Lin Wan\u2019er (Alani) remarked, \u201cThe pace of technological advancement in computing over the past few years resembles the Big Bang of the universe. We might see the challenges of computing power resolved in just a few years.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat sounds reasonable,\u201d Li Yalin responded with a smile. \u201cI\u2019m not concerned about my colleagues around the globe. I\u2019m confident that soon, the computing power available to them will increase dramatically.\u201d<\/p>\n

He continued, \u201cMs. Lin, Mr. Wade, if there\u2019s nothing else, I\u2019ll get started on implementing Miss Lin\u2019s idea and aim to put it into action as soon as possible!\u201d<\/p>\n

Charlie Wade looked at Lin Wan\u2019er (Alani), gave her a thumbs up, and said to Li Yalin, \u201cAlright, Inspector Li, you go ahead. We\u2019ll reach out if we need anything.\u201d After hanging up the phone, Charlie Wade couldn\u2019t resist asking Lin Wan\u2019er (Alani), \u201cMs. Lin, the university and major that Inspector Li is recommending for you\u2014surely you studied that a long time ago, right?\u201d<\/p>\n

Lin Wan\u2019er (Alani) chuckled, having lived through many years and earned numerous degrees. It was no surprise that she had explored criminology at some point.<\/p>\n

In response to Charlie Wade\u2019s question, Lin Wan\u2019er (Alani) smiled and explained, \u201cI studied at school, but not in that particular major.\u201d<\/p>\n

She elaborated, \u201cThe UCI that Inspector Li mentioned refers to the University of California, Irvine. The university\u2019s predecessor was called California College, and I was its very first student, as well as the first Chinese student.\u201d<\/p>\n

Charlie Wade nodded knowingly, responding with a smile, \u201cI had a feeling you must have some connection to that school.\u201d<\/p>\n

Curiously, he then asked, \u201cBy the way, in what year did you attend California College?\u201d<\/p>\n

Lin Wan\u2019er (Alani) pondered for a moment before replying, \u201cIt\u2019s been quite some time, so I can\u2019t remember the details clearly, but it was before the Civil War, as I left North America when the Civil War broke out.\u201d<\/p>\n

She hesitated before saying, \u201cI think it was around 1854 or 1855\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

Charlie Wade couldn\u2019t help but cough awkwardly, saying, \u201cAhem\u2026 I knew it would be a long time ago, but I didn\u2019t expect it to be that far back\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

Lin Wan\u2019er (Alani) smiled and explained, \u201cEven though you think it feels like ages ago, I was already over 200 years old at that time. It was around then that many state universities were founded in the U.S. I was rather bored, so I applied to several schools to study. Since my appearance hasn\u2019t changed, I didn\u2019t dare to stay too long in college. I had to complete my courses quickly, then move on to the next place, treating it as a pastime while I escaped.\u201d<\/p>\n

As she spoke, Lin Wan\u2019er (Alani) added, \u201cThere\u2019s actually a photo of the first group of students and teachers in the historical archives of that school. I\u2019m in it, but the photo is so old and blurry that I doubt you\u2019d recognize me if you saw it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Intrigued, Charlie Wade searched the university\u2019s website and found a historical group photo of the earliest students. Although the image from over a century ago was faded and yellowed, he managed to spot Lin Wan\u2019er (Alani) among a group of men in Western attire. In the photo, she appeared quite slender, and the overall yellowish hue made her resemble an Indian girl.<\/p>\n

Charlie Wade would not have recognized Lin Wan\u2019er (Alani) without her prior mention of being in the photo.<\/p>\n

After examining the group picture closely, Charlie Wade remarked in surprise, \u201cIt looks like there were only a handful of female students at that school.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s correct,\u201d Lin Wan\u2019er (Alani) confirmed. \u201cDuring that time, gender inequality was still prevalent. Women had a low social status and weren\u2019t valued by their families, so only a few were able to attend university.\u201d<\/p>\n

As she spoke, Lin Wan\u2019er (Alani) leaned closer to the photo, pointing at a middle-aged white man and telling Charlie Wade, \u201cThis man was a highly respected professor at the university and one of its co-founders. Interestingly, he was an orphan raised in the UK. When I brought him from the UK to North America, I became his adopted daughter. Later, when I went to Japan, he even wrote a recommendation for me to study there.\u201d<\/p>\n

Charlie Wade sighed, \u201cMiss Lin, your life has been so vibrant.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lin Wan\u2019er (Alani) smiled and replied, \u201cYoung Master, you are destined to seek immortality in the future, and then you too can experience such a colorful life.\u201d<\/p>\n

Charlie Wade shook his head, saying, \u201cSociety is evolving too rapidly. Even if I were to live forever and no longer hide from Sara like you did, I would still have to find ways to conceal myself from the world. It wouldn\u2019t be possible to travel the globe with different identities and blend into various lifestyles like you did in the past.\u201d<\/p>\n
