Woke Up and Left the Cage of My Marriage 12

Chapter 12

A few days later, there was still no sign of Natalie. But it was James Bennett who showed up at the Fletcher villa himself.

Ethan met him in the study of his temporary office, secretly holding out a shred of hope. Maybe Natalie had sent her father to negotiate. Maybe this was all just her way of trying to bargain with him.

But James didn’t come to talk conditions. Instead, he laid a folder on the desk, stamped with the official seal of the clerk’s office-an entirely legal divorce certificate.

“Ethan, this is what Natalie insisted on.” James’s voice carried a faint sense of relief as he placed the divorce certificate on the table. “She said… from now on, she and the Fletcher family are even. There’s nothing left to settle.”

Ethan stared at that glaring red document. For a moment, he almost couldn’t believe his eyes -a rush of blood pounded in his head, as if he’d been struck by lightning.

Divorce? Natalie had really… divorced him?

This woman-who once chased after him so recklessly, swearing she loved him, even forcing herself to follow those ridiculous family rules for his sake-had now walked away so décisively?

He snatched up the divorce papers, flipping them open. Natalie’s signature slashed across the page—neat, firm, with not a trace of hesitation. That handwriting was like a searing blade, burning into his heart. A sharp pain stabbed through his chest.

“She thinks she can just come and go from the Fletcher family whenever she wants?” Ethan’s voice was ice-cold, full of rage and disbelief. “Tell her, as long as I don’t agree, she’ll always be Mrs. Fletcher!”

Before James could answer, Ethan tore the divorce certificate to shreds, scattering the pieces

across the floor.

James stood there, shocked by Ethan’s loss of control. After a moment, he just sighed. Natalie’s resolve is like stone, Ethan-immovable once cast. You know this. It’s better for both of you to walk away now, while there’s still a shred of dignity left.”

With that, he turned and left.

After sending James Bennett away, Ethan forced himself to calm down and buried himself in work.

When his team came to give him updates, he cut them off in a hard voice. “Ignore her. She’s

just playing at being rebellious. Once reality sets in and she finds herself with nowhere to turn, she’ll come crawling back on her knees.”

But later, as he picked up his pen to sign an important contract, he froze. The over the paper for a long time, not moving..

pen hovered

He didn’t even realize it when, instead of his own name, he wrote “Natalie Bennett” on the signature line. The name leapt off the page, mocking him.

Frustrated, he crushed the document into a ball and tossed it straight into the trash.

Just then, Vivian was pushed in by a staff member, sitting in her wheelchair.

Her face was streaked with tears, and her voice trembled as she choked out, “Ethan… my leg hurts so much… The doctor said it might never heal. Why did Natalie do this to me? What did I ever do to deserve this?”

Before, whenever Vivian put on this helpless act, Ethan would have felt sorry for her, gently comforting her with soft words.

But today, seeing her affected tears, all he could think about was Natalie. He remembered how Natalie had stood proud and stubborn, head held high-even when beaten black and blue by family punishment and locked up alone in the old chapel.

Comparing the two, for the first time, he found Vivian’s tears… almost irritating.

He pressed his fingers to his brow, voice cool and detached. “That’s enough. It’s over. I’ll have my assistant send more money to your account. Go find the best doctor for treatment.

Vivian didn’t expect that kind of response. Her sobs stalled, a look of disbelief flickering in her eyes as she opened her mouth to protest. But before she could speak, Ethan was already on the intercom. “Have someone take Ms. Grant back to rest.”

After Vivian was wheeled out, Ethan sat there in silence for a moment. Then he turned to his

assistant. “Check all the transaction records for Mrs. Fletcher’s supplementary cards.’

The reply came quickly. “Mr. Fletcher, all of Mrs. Fletcher’s cards were frozen before the explosion. And her personal account-she’d already emptied and transferred all the funds.”

Ethan’s mind went blank.

She froze all her cards. She moved all her money.

This wasn’t some reckless tantrum. This was a plan-a well-prepared escape.

An even colder wave of panic gripped his heart.

Did she really… not want anything from the Fletchers?

She had left everything. Even the money he gave her, she’d wiped it all clean without a second
