Nothing Fell Apart by Mark Twain 5
Chapter 5
I was going over project specs with a client in the conference room when the door flew open.
The boss walked in, beaming, with a man trailing close behind him. He clapped his hands to grab everyone’s attention. “Listen up, everybody. I’d like to introduce Vincent Cohen. He’s a young tech prodigy and our company’s new special consultant. He’ll be heading up technology development, so please give him your full cooperation.”
My hand went still. I looked up and met Vincent’s gaze.

Monica immediately chimed in, smiling. “Right this way, Mr. Cohen.”
Vincent frowned, looking like he was about to argue.
I had already gathered my documents and stood up to address my client. “Mr. Duncan, we’ll discuss the details later. Please excuse me.”
I turned and walked out of the conference room, but I heard footsteps right behind me.
Vincent was following.
The moment the office door clicked shut, arms wrapped around me from behind.
He rested his chin on the top of my head, just like he used to, his voice heavy with guilt. “Becca, I’m so sorry… I didn’t know you were pregnant. I’ve missed you so much since you left..”
I went rigid. I shoved him away hard, stepping back to put some distance between us.
“You saw the divorce papers, didn’t you?
“We’re done.”
“I don’t accept that!” Vincent stepped forward, trying to grab my hand. “Becca, please, just give me one more chance.”
I looked at him, and tears suddenly spilled down my cheeks. “I left the country just to get away from you and Gia. I wanted to keep a shred of dignity. I didn’t want to be humiliated. You’ve loved Gia for years, and I stepped aside for you. Why did you follow me? Couldn’t we just part with some grace?”

I sniffled, my voice choking up. “We’ve known each other since we were kids. Can’t you even grant me that small kindness?”
Vincent’s hand froze in midair, his eyes filled with remorse. “I’m sorry… Becca, I know I strayed during our marriage, but it made me realize something. You’re the one I love…”
“Strayed?” I interrupted, shaking my head. “You never really cared about me, did you?”
I wiped my tears and forced my voice to steady. “You and Gia are both important to me, and I genuinely wish you both the best. But I can’t be around either of you anymore. Seeing you just reminds me of the betrayal. It reminds me of the baby I lost…”
“Vincent,” I said, looking him in the eye. The love I once felt was gone, replaced by sheer exhaustion. “Please go. Don’t come looking for me again.”
Vincent walked away, clearly unwilling to accept it.
I sank into my chair, my body feeling ice cold.
Suddenly, my phone rang. The name “Gia” flashed on the screen.
I stared at it, hesitating for a few seconds before answering.
“Becca…” Gianna’s voice sounded awkward and tight. “I…”
She didn’t finish the sentence. The line went silent.
After a long pause, she whispered, “I’m sorry.”
I closed my eyes. “Gia, you don’t need to apologize. You’re important to me, and I’ve never forgotten that you raised me. If you had just told me earlier, I would have stepped aside. I wouldn’t have made things difficult. But instead, you let me find out in the worst possible way.”

Sobbing came through the receiver. Gianna’s voice was thick with tears. “Becca, I’m so sorry… I never wanted to hurt you. I just couldn’t control myself…”
“Gia,” I cut her off, my voice even. “I respect you, and I know your life hasn’t been easy. But if you really didn’t want to hurt me, you would have rejected Vincent a long time ago. You should have made him give up. But you didn’t. You accepted his advances again and again, and you gave him hope.”
I paused before adding, “I know all of this, and I don’t blame you. I just… I need time before I can face you again.”
Gianna was silent for a moment before asking cautiously, “Are you… settling in okay over there? When do you plan to come back?”
“I probably won’t be coming back,” I said softly. “I like it here. I want to start over.”
I hung up the phone. Once I had calmed myself down, I went back to work.
