She has been thinking about what happened the day they were supposed to go on a date. Was that person going to be a problem in futre? Would he still make her life hard and make her scared of walking around alone? If it happens that she be in a relationship with Mlunghisi what would happen with that person?
There’s one more thing that is bothering her. He hasn’t told her what the meeting he wants to have with her father is about. She’s been asking herself wht it could be about.
“What’s stressing you?” Her sister asks as she walks in.
“Nothing. Please borrow me your car.”
“No. The last time I borrowed you you didn’t fill the tank. Where are you going?”
“To see Mlunghisi. I want to talk to him face to face.”
“He’s here. They are having a serious conversation with dad and some man.”
“He’s here already? i wonder what they are here for.”
“It looks serious. There’s even a cow outside. He came with it. They are calling you.” She gets up fast and walks to the living room. Indeed he is here. She slowly walks to an empty couch and sit there.
“Risuna,Mlunghisi has come with his uncle to ask me something. ” She looks at Mlunghisi then looks down.
“He has come here to ask for permission and my blessings to date you. I command his respect. If it was someone they wouldn’t have done something like this. What do you say?”
“I accept. “She didn’t even have to think first.
“My daughter is a good child. She has never given us problems. She has behaved well all this time. I am trusting you with my daughter. I expect you to protect her with your all. “
“Thank you sir. I promise to treat her well and I will protect her.”
“Hlungwani,thank you for welcoming us and for giving my nephew your blessings. We promise that everything will be done accordingly and your daughter will be safe with him. We also brought a gift for you with us. It’s outside. We can go and see it.”
Risuna’s father and the uncle walk out. Risuna looks at Mlunghisi and smiles. She wasn’t expecting all of this. She knew he was a traditional man but not to this extent. He shocked her with this. But she loves it.
He opens his arms and she walks to him and wrapps her hands around his body.
“Thank you for saying yes. “
MLUNGHISI
Everything went well. Mr Hlungwani gave me his blessings. I won’t have to sneak around with Risuna. It’s official. We are in a relationship. There is nothing that my dad can do. He will not stop me from being with the one I love. He can try all he wants but there’s no turning back now.
“I’ve been looking for you. Where did you go? I got a job for you.”
“I went to see Risuna’s father. I went there with malume Simon to ask for his blessings to date his daughter and he agreed.” I didn’t see it coming. I just felt my cheek sting. He picked a fire wood and threw it at me and it hit my cheek. It burnt my cheek.
“Dad,what’s wrong?”
“Are you out of your mind? You might as well start looking for another place to stay! I’m not going to stay with a rebellious son! You want to have us banished from this village?”
“There’s nothing I haven’t done for this family. But you can’t even do just one thing for me. Just accept the woman that I love. What’s hard there? “
“That girl will never be my daughter in law. Over ny dead body!” Talking to him while he’s in this state is not a good idea. He’s angry and I won’t be able to calm him down when he’s like this. I just have to let it go and revisit this topic maybe later. Now is not a good time.
After my conversation with dad I left for the job that he told me about. I put all my energy there. It was nothing hectic. Just transport stuff for someone. After that I came home and locked myself in my room. How dad reacted got to me. It hurt my feelings. In other words I should put an end to everything. Where am I going to go if he kicks me out of here? What I’m sure of is that Risuna willl never be fully welcome here. Dad will make sure that he makes her see that she is not welcome. The best thing for me to do is to look for my own place. I will not stop taking care of my family. But I will do it from a distance.
It’s a new day. I’ve decided to put what happened with dad at the back of my mind. I called Risuna and let her know that during the day I’ll be going to see her. I also need to do some things in her village. I was serious about looking for my own place. I’m going to that village to speak to their chief and ask for land to build on. If they need someone who can vouch for me it won’t be that hard. Justice spoke to his father and he will help.
The noise that’s outside makes me to stop what I’m doing and go out. When I see Risuna’s sister’s car my mind starts racing. Why did she come here? Does she realize that her being here is a risk? Especially with the car because the neighbors might tell dad.
“Risuna,why are you here? I told you that i was coming to you.”
“I didn’t want you to be tired walking all the way to come and see me.”
“Mlunghisi don’t be like that. Can’t you be happy that she’s here?”
“Mom,dad said he doesn’t want to see her here
If she comes here he’s going to report her. That’s why I don’t want her to come here. It’s not safe for her. We need to leave.”
“Okay. Let me go and get your presents, my daughter.” My mother goes to her room and comes back with a bag and gives it to her. I take the bag when she opens it.
“You will see it in the car.”
“Thank you mom. It was nice seeing you.”
“It’s a pleasure. You should visit us again. ” I take her hand and we walk to the car. I open the passenger door for her and she gives me the keys. I get in and drive off. The man that I used to work with taught me how to drive.. I may not have a license but I can drive.
“Are you ashamed of me?”Where’s that coming from?
“Baby I’m sorry we have to leave like this. If I was ashamed of you I wouldn’t have gone all the way to your father to ask for his blessing. Dad doesn’t want you at his place. He was livid yesterday. He even said that if I want to continue seeing you i must look for my own place.”
“I’m sorry.”
“It’s okay. Maybe it’s for the best. I will have peace at my own place and won’t have to sneak you in. I am going to speak to the chief at your village. Hopefully he won’t be as hard headed as ours. “
“Won’t your father blame me?”
“According to him everyone is wrong and he is the only one who’s right. Don’t stress about this.”
I need to do this. It doesn’t matter whether dad blames her or not,but I need to leave that place. I’m old and this is the next step.
