Chapter 3
The next day, I arrived at school.
As soon as I walked into the classroom, I saw the strange looks from my classmates.
I looked at my seat; there was a black bag on the desk.
I walked closer, and immediately a pungent smell of rot hit me in the face.
I opened it cautiously to take a look, and was instantly so disgusted I threw up right there.
It was a bag of dead rats.
And these were rats that had been run over by cars; their brains and intestines were spilling out.
I suppressed my nausea, picked up the bag of dead rats, walked to the campus garbage disposal station, and threw it away.
Then I went to the convenience store to buy some clean rags and disinfectant, and wiped my desk and chair carefully many times before stopping.
Most of the class just watched coldly, refusing to give me a hand. Everyone was terrified of getting into trouble.
Only a few classmates I was on decent terms with couldn’t help but come over to offer a few words of comfort: “Sarah, when

Marcus brought his crew in to throw those dead rats, we moved your books out of the way.
Here you go.”
I cast a grateful glance at them.
Otherwise, I would have had to buy all new textbooks.
“Hey, Sarah, why does Marcus have it out for you like that?”
“Yeah, seriously. He’s about to take his SATs, yet he comes down here to bully a secondary schooler like us. He has no shame!”
“Shh, careful, keep your voices down…”
Two girls were speaking up for me against the injustice.
But their mouths were instantly covered by other classmates, signaling them to be careful not to invite disaster.
“I don’t know…” I shook my head in silence, not wanting to reveal that it might be because of my mother.
When classes ended for the day, I was once again dragged out of the classroom by Marcus and his gang.
A female classmate had forgotten something and returned to the room, just in time to see me being forcibly taken away.
She tried to step in and help, but a tall boy shoved her directly to the ground.

she was instantly scared to tears.
She could only watch through tear-filled eyes as they dragged me away.
Not long after, the girl, still sobbing, prepared to go find the Homeroom Teacher to report it, hoping to save me.
But suddenly, a soft, gentle voice sounded in her ear: “Excuse me, are you in Class 8?
Have you seen where my Sarah went?
I went to the classroom but couldn’t find her…”
At the school’s small playground, Marcus and his crew had me surrounded.
Few people came here, and now that school was out, it was completely deserted.
Marcus even had someone guard the only entrance to stop anyone from coming in.
Today, they had come up with another “fun” game.
They made me stand under the hoop while they shot from the three-point line.
If anyone made a basket, the ball would drop right onto my head.
And whoever didn’t hit me thirty times today would have to pay for dinner.
I stood under the hoop, clutching my head and covering my ears

From above came the intermittent thud, thud, thud!
The sound of basketballs slamming against the backboard.
With every collision between ball and board, my heart skipped a beat.
Thud!
Finally, someone made a shot. The heavy ball smashed directly onto the arms protecting my head with immense force.
Pain instantly shot through my arms.
My head buzzed from the impact.
Buzzing.
Watching me cower and tremble, holding my head in misery, a flash of pleasure crossed Marcus’s eyes.
Then, as if remembering something, a vicious expression surfaced on his face.
He raised the basketball, but this time, he didn’t aim for the hoop.
He aimed straight at my back and hurled the ball with all his might.
“Don’t you dare!!!”
Just as he released the ball, a shrill, furious voice rang out near

The voice was so familiar to him, yet somehow strange.
