Night Carved Paths Into Silence by Zyrel Ash 99
Chapter 99
“It’s not as bad as you’re making it out to be. When the Mosley
Group went bankrupt, I poached all the talented long–time
employees. They have good positions now in companies under
the Livingston Group.”
He thought for a moment, then continued, “As for your dad, I
suggested he put a new team together back then, but he felt he
was too old and didn’t want to fight anymore.”
Madeleine froze, turning her head to stare at Roderick.
“Why didn’t you ever tell me this?”
“You never asked.”
Roderick raised an eyebrow, only realizing his mistake when he
saw the gratitude and admiration in Madeleine’s eyes.
He should have told her sooner! What was all that effort for?
On the way, Roderick told her more about what happened after
the Mosley Group went bankrupt.
Harold Mosley had taken a huge hit back then, partly because

his life’s work was destroyed, and partly because his daughter’s.
transformation was unbelievable to him.
Roderick was the one who stayed by the old couple’s side
during that time, and he also bought back the remaining
production lines at a high price after the company was
liquidated.
Even though the company was gone, the core technology
wasn’t lost.
This was also why Harold and Clarissa always felt they had let
the Livingston family down.
Madeleine listened in a daze, her mind flashing back to the first
time she saw her parents after losing her memory, and the
things they said.
No wonder they always said she had let Roderick down.
No wonder… they didn’t want her to hurt him again.
Madeleine’s nose tingled, and she lowered her head, picking at
her fingers. Roderick knew this was a habit she’d had since she
was a child.
He didn’t say anything, just reached out and held Madeleine’s

small hand.
“Let’s not talk about this. At least everything is heading in the
right direction now, isn’t it?”
Madeleine nodded sullenly and spoke in a muffled voice, “I
know. I still haven’t figured out what happened, haven’t made
up for my mistakes, or gotten my revenge. I won’t be defeated.”
After she spoke, she paused for a moment, her voice tinged
with tears.
“I just don’t know what’s wrong with me.”
What Madeleine really wanted to say was that she didn’t know
how to thank Roderick.
To thank him for staying by her side, believing in her, and giving
everything for her and her family during the time she was least
like herself.
But she couldn’t say it.
She didn’t even dare to look at Roderick right now.
She was afraid that if their eyes met, her tears would start to
fall uncontrollably.
Chapter 99
Roderick didn’t say anything more. He guided her head to rest
on his shoulder and thought for a moment about how to cheer
her up.
“How about we go change in a bit, and I’ll take you out for
something good to eat?
That Spicy Numbing Hot Pot place we always went to as kids is
still open.”
Madeleine sniffled. “That’s so high in calories.”
Roderick: “I’ll work out with you tomorrow after we eat.”
Working out…
Madeleine thought of that steamy scene in the gym the other
day, and her ears grew hot again. One moment she was crying,
the next she was laughing.
Madeleine hadn’t eaten much at the dinner party, and after
going home to change, she was actually hungry.
“Is it okay for us to just leave the kids at home like this?”
Roderick thought for a moment. “When we were kids, our
parents wouldn’t let us eat it. Now that we’re parents, we

should learn a thing or two from them.”
The Spicy Numbing Hot Pot place Roderick mentioned was one
they had been eating at for years as kids. Back then, it was just
a no–frills local diner, and both sets of parents never let them
go, worried it was unsanitary.
Going for Spicy Numbing Hot Pot was one of the rare times Madeleine and Roderick worked together seamlessly.
“You’re not allowed to tell my parents!”
“You’re not allowed to tell my dad either!”
“Fine, pinky swear!”
“A pinky swear isn’t enough. What if you go back on your word?
Your parents don’t hit you as hard as my dad hits me.”
“Then what do you suggest?”
“Let’s write up a contract. We’ll both sign it.”
Madeleine couldn’t help but laugh thinking about that childhood
conversation, and she asked casually, “Do you still have that
contract from back then?
That’s hilarious.”
Chapter 99
“Yeah, I still have it.”
“Huh?”
Madeleine froze for a second. Seeing that he didn’t look like he
was joking, she was left speechless.
“Ricki, your hoarding habit is acting up again. You’ve been like
this since you were a kid, can’t bear to throw anything away.”
