The Heart Surgeon’s Last Patient Novel Chapter 78

Night Carved Paths Into Silence by Zyrel Ash 78

Chapter 78

Was it good?

Madeleine didn’t think so.

She sniffled, her mind racing.

“Right, you won’t let me see Mrs. Miller. Is it because she

supports me and Edward being together?”

“Probably.”

Roderick frowned. “I was never around when you two met

before, but whenever you talked, your feelings for Edward…

seemed to get deeper.”

Madeleine nodded. It was just as she had guessed.

This whole thing was too strange. She had inexplicably fallen in

love with Edward and done so much for him.

And Mrs. Miller, it was as if she was on a mission, insisting on

setting the two of them up.

“Don’t think about that stuff.”

Chapter 78

Roderick went from wiping her tears to caressing Madeleine’s

face. His large palm rested on her cheek, and the warmth

inexplicably made Madeleine feel very secure.

“Kev will worry if he comes over and sees this.”

Hearing about her son, Madeleine finally snapped out of it.

“Where is he?”

“In the yard, learning Go.”

Madeleine quickly wiped away her snot and tears. “Then I’ll go

see him.”

She had just taken a step when Roderick pulled her back.

“Wha-”

Roderick pulled her into a hug, pressing Madeleine forcefully

against his chest, stopping her from making another sound.

“Maddie.”

Roderick’s voice came through his chest, sounding muffled and

unreal to Madeleine.

He called her Maddie?

Chapter 78

Didn’t he always call her by her full name before?

Madeleine was a bit dazed by his sudden hug. She placed her

hand on Roderick’s chest and poked his pectoral muscle with

her index finger.

“What are you doing?”

“Don’t move.”

Roderick’s voice held a hint of restraint and surprise. He

stopped Madeleine’s attempt to struggle, just holding her

tightly.

After a long moment, Roderick released her and returned to his

usual cold demeanor.

“It’s nothing. Go find Kev.”

Madeleine’s hand remained in its previous position, only

dropping after a while.

Was it her imagination?

Ricki had looked so vulnerable just now.

She turned and walked towards the yard. After just two steps,

she couldn’t help but look back again.

Chapter 78

Roderick was still standing there, his posture upright, his

features stern, his gaze following her.

“Is there something else?”

“Nope, nothing.”

Madeleine shook her head and trotted out.

Roderick stared for a long time, and finally, the corners of his mouth lifted into a very faint smile, but it quickly disappeared.

When he was hugging Madeleine just now, he really wanted to

say something.

A confession?

Sweet nothings?

Anything, as long as it could bring them closer.

But when he remembered this was the eighteen–year–old

Madeleine, Roderick held back.

Tsk, she’s still just a kid.

Don’t want to scare her.

Chapter 78

Besides, what if the little girl falls for me again?

Hmm, it’s not impossible. I could induce… no, guide her a little,

and maybe I’ll get to the day Madeleine confesses her feelings

to me.

At that thought, Roderick’s smile grew wider.

Madeleine had also learned Go as a child. She wasn’t very good,

just skilled enough to play with a kid.

Owen and Roderick were talking in the room. Madeleine was

curious about what they were saying, and being distracted, she

lost several games.

Okay, it wasn’t because she was distracted. It was because

Kevin was too smart, far beyond Madeleine’s rookie level.

“Mommy, are you tired?”

Kevin was sharp as a tack, worried that Mommy would be

unhappy about losing.

“Let’s not play anymore. I want some fruit.”

“Okay, Mommy will go get some for you.”

Chapter 78

Madeleine grinned, thinking it was the perfect chance to go.

inside and eavesdrop on what the father and son were talking

about.

To Madeleine’s disappointment, the father and son weren’t

having a personal chat. They were talking about company

business, which she didn’t understand. She grabbed the fruit

platter and was about to head out.

Just as she reached the door, Madeleine saw a woman walk in

from outside, wearing a brown leather jacket, slim–fit pants, and

combat boots, looking incredibly cool.

So cool!

Just as Madeleine was wondering who this cool woman was,

Kevin waved at her and called out, “Auntie Rebecca~”

Madeleine’s smile froze.

Auntie Rebecca?

The Rebecca from Roderick’s phone!

Madeleine turned her head, her murderous gaze landing on

Chapter 78

Roderick, and said darkly, “You came so obediently.”

Roderick: ?

What “obediently“?

Rebecca had already noticed Madeleine when she came in. She

glanced over and walked over to pick up Kevin.

That kid Roderick said Madeleine was different now.

Different?

Oh, before she was all dolled up, today she’s just lightly made

“Come here, Maddie, let me hold you. Have you put on some

weight lately?”

Rebecca smiled as she picked up Kevin, leaned close to his ear,

and asked, “Has your mom hit you recently?”

Kevin answered very seriously, “No, no.”
