The Heart Surgeon’s Last Patient Novel Chapter 68

Night Carved Paths Into Silence by Zyrel Ash 68

Her body back then… it was so strange. It wasn’t like someone

was possessing her body, but more like she herself was in

control, compelled to move closer to Edward.

Why?

On what grounds?

Why on earth should she have to be a people–pleaser for

Edward?

Madeleine tapped her head and shot up in bed.

“No, I can’t put this off. I have to go talk to Roderick and make

things clear.”

The thought that she might turn into a people–pleaser if her

memories came back made Madeleine’s internal alarms go off.

She had to go give Roderick a heads–up, so if that day ever

came, he would just kick her out of the house.

It would be best if he never let her come back to see Kevin, her

parents, or him for the rest of her life.

Chapter 68

She had already hurt them deeply enough.

Madeleine got out of bed in such a hurry that she forgot to put

on her slippers.

She jogged to the guest room next door, only to find the door

open and the room completely empty, with no one inside.

“Where is he?

What’s he doing up this late at night instead of sleeping.”

Madeleine scratched her head, and when she came out, she

noticed the study door across the hall was ajar, with a faint light

coming from inside.

No way…

That workaholic, is he still working overtime after such a long

day?

Madeleine tiptoed over and raised her hand to knock, when she

heard the clear clinking of glass from inside.

Hm?

She gently pushed the door open, and the strong smell of

alcohol immediately hit her.

Chapter 68

Roderick stood in front of the floor–to–ceiling window with his

back to the door, his long fingers holding a glass of amber-

colored whiskey.

The moonlight outlined his tense shoulders, his shirt collar was

messily open, revealing his sexy collarbone.

“Ricki?”

Madeleine called out softly.

The man’s back clearly stiffened for a moment, but he didn’t

turn around.

Madeleine took a few steps closer and then noticed that a

bottle of liquor on the desk was already more than half empty.

Her heart clenched, and she couldn’t help but frown and scold,

“Why are you drinking so much this late at night?”

“What is it?”

Roderick’s voice was incredibly hoarse as he finally turned

around.

His eyes were an unnatural red, as if he was suppressing too

many emotions.

Chapter 68

Before she could answer, Roderick’s gaze fell on Madeleine’s

bare feet, and his brow immediately furrowed.

“Why aren’t you wearing shoes?”

His voice was low and hoarse, tinged with a bit of drunkenness

and blame.

Before Madeleine could answer, Roderick had already strode

over and swept her up in his arms.

Madeleine let out a cry of surprise and instinctively wrapped her

arms around his neck, her whole body enveloped by the strong

scent of alcohol and cedar from him.

“Put me down, I can walk by myself.”

She protested quietly, but didn’t dare to struggle too much,

afraid that the drunk man would lose his balance.

Roderick paid her no mind, walked straight to the sofa, and

carefully set her down.

His movements were gentle, as if he were afraid of breaking a precious treasure, but his gaze was frighteningly intense.

“The floor is cold.”

Chapter 68

He said in a low voice, his words slurred from the alcohol, but

he still stubbornly knelt on one knee, cupping her cold feet in

his palms.

Madeleine’s heart skipped a beat.

His palms were scorching hot, the warmth spreading from the

soles of her feet all the way to her cheeks. She tried to pull her

foot back, but he held it even tighter.

“Don’t move.”

Roderick looked up at her, his deep eyes swirling with emotions

she couldn’t understand. “You’ll catch a cold.”

Madeleine had known Roderick for so many years and thought

she understood him well, but ever since turning twenty–six, she.

had lost that confidence.

The Roderick now was like a completely different person; she

couldn’t see through him at all.

“Roderick.”

She called out softly, her voice trembling slightly, “I have

something to tell you…”

Chapter 68

Roderick’s movements paused, his eyes suddenly darkening.

He let go of her foot, and as he stood up, his body swayed

slightly. The alcohol was clearly hitting him.

“If this is about Edward, I don’t want to hear it.”

He turned to leave, his voice as cold as ice.

Madeleine grew anxious and grabbed his wrist. “It’s not!

It’s about me…”

“1

Roderick spun around abruptly, the force pulling her completely

off her feet. Madeleine crashed unexpectedly into his chest,

and he held her waist tightly.

“Madeleine.”

He looked down at her, his breath carrying the rich scent of

whiskey. “What do you really want?”
