The Heart Surgeon’s Last Patient Novel Chapter 53

Night Carved Paths Into Silence by Zyrel Ash 53

What if, when her memory returned, she hurt Roderick and

Kevin again because of Edward?

As her thoughts grew more chaotic, she stumbled and fell hard

onto the floor.

“Mommy!”

Kevin cried out as he dashed inside, his face drained of color.

Sitting on the floor in confusion, Madeleine looked up. “Baby,

what are you doing here?”

After coming home from work, she had played with her son for

a while and shared a small meal. When he had gone off quietly

to draw, she slipped into the dance room.

Kevin crouched down and blew gently on her foot.

“Mommy, does it hurt?”

“Nope. I’m fine.”

Warmth spread through her chest, all her earlier frustration and

unease melting away in his presence.

In truth, Kevin had been watching the doorway for a long time.

This was his first time seeing his mother dance, and he had

been so stunned that even his jaw dropped.

When she fell, he couldn’t hold back and cried out.

“Mommy, you dance so well, just like a fairy.”

His eyes sparkled as he looked at her with absolute

seriousness.

Madeleine laughed aloud. “Really? Thank you, sweetheart.”

“But Mommy… you don’t look very happy.”

His perception startled her.

“Why? I’m happy.”

“Liar.” Kevin shook his head. “Your eyes don’t have sparkles in

them anymore.”

Her baby boy was observant. Madeleine couldn’t help but

marvel at it.

She stroked his head, falling silent for a long time.

“Baby.” She gathered her courage and suddenly asked, “If one

day I had to leave you, what would you do?”

At once, Kevin’s pupils trembled violently, his face crumpling as

if it were the end of the world.

Madeleine felt a pang in her heart when she saw the sorrow on

her son’s face.

For a four–year–old, the question was far too cruel.

But she had to prepare him for it.

She still remembered Roderick’s words from before. If the

“woman” that once possessed her body were to return, Kevin

would never be able to accept it.

If that day came, she would rather Roderick drive that woman

out.

Leaving this home would be the best choice for both him and

their child.

“Mommy.”

Kevin reached out to hug her, his voice choked with tears, as

though he was struggling to hold back his emotions.

“I don’t want you to leave.”

He couldn’t understand. His mother had finally become so kind

and warm. Why would she want to leave again?

Had he done something wrong to upset her?

But she looked as though she did love him…

“Sweetheart.” She softened her voice, as gentle as when she

lulled him to sleep. “I was only saying that it could happen.

Like… like when the weather forecast says it might rain

tomorrow.”

Kevin blinked his watery eyes, tiny teardrops clinging to his

lashes.

“But I don’t like rain.”

Madeleine couldn’t help laughing, though her nose stung. “I

don’t like it either. But sunshine and rain follow the laws of

nature, just like birth, aging, and death. We all have to

experience them.“.

The little one listened quietly. He didn’t fully understand her

words, but he trusted his mommy.

Madeleine sighed inwardly. She couldn’t lie to him, yet she

couldn’t place the cruelty of the adult world on the shoulders of

a four–year–old either.

“Mommy.”

Kevin quickly changed the subject. “Tomorrow’s the weekend.

Do you still remember what you have promised me?”

Madeleine blinked before recalling that yesterday, when she

had forgotten to pick him up, she had promised to take him to

the amusement park on the weekend.

“Of course.”

Kevin curved his lips into a smile. “Did you tell Daddy?”

Madeleine scratched her head. “Not yet, but when Daddy comes

back tonight, I’ll talk to him.”

“Okay!”

What made her feel slightly uneasy was her memory that

Roderick had height fright.

Back then, she had teased him by making a bet, dragging him

along to an amusement park.

Chapter 53

Roller coasters, log rides… she insisted on riding whatever was

high and thrilling.

Even now, she could recall Roderick’s pale face.

When she returned home, her parents had scolded her for it

because it had been his first time on such rides, and afterward,

he even came down with a fever.

So when Kevin whispered yesterday that he wanted both

Mommy and Daddy to take him to the amusement park,

Madeleine guessed that perhaps Roderick had never brought

him to such places before.

But she assumed that as a model father, surely Roderick could

overcome his fear for his son’s sake.

At worst, he could just wait on the side while she went on the

rides with Kevin. She wouldn’t push him this time.

That evening, before dinner, Roderick returned. Over the meal,

Madeleine mentioned the amusement park trip.
