The Heart Surgeon’s Last Patient Novel Chapter 47

Night Carved Paths Into Silence by Zyrel Ash 47

Chapter 47

Madeleine glanced over at them. Each secretary was attractive and well–groomed, yet different from what she had imagined.

Mainly, their clothing surprised her.

Nobody had told her the dress code was this casual!

Tracksuits, T–shirts, shorts, plaid shirts with jeans…

Most importantly, aside from her, not one of them wore high

heels.

Madeleine scratched her head awkwardly. “Do I look a little out

of place?”

“No, not at all.”

One secretary frantically waved her hands. “We have business

attire, too. And heels as well. We can change right now!”

“That’s not what I meant.”

The secretaries exchanged glances.

Then what did she mean?

Wasn’t she obviously criticizing them for dressing too casually?

“Really, wear whatever you like. Never mind. Just get back to

work.”

Madeleine smiled and waved, leaving under their nervous

gazes.

The moment she walked out, the secretaries immediately gathered together in hushed voices.

“This Mrs. Livingston is something else. First day here and already setting the tone. Our days of casual wear are over.”

“Ugh, so annoying. Now we’ll have to wear business attire every day, even without client meetings.”

“Maybe she’s here to spy on us. Haven’t you heard? There was trouble at the branch office. They say Mrs. Livingston was behind it.”

“What? But this is her own family’s company. Why would she do that?”

“You don’t get it. She’s in love with the Carroll Group’s CEO. Her

loyalties are elsewhere.”

“Oh… poor Mr. Livingston.”

Far down the hall, Madeleine felt a chill down her spine.

Someone must be talking behind her back!

All morning, Madeleine followed Gerry around the company,

familiarizing herself with the environment.

Her feet were already aching terribly, but she didn’t dare show

Damn it, if only she had known, she never would have worn

heels!

Gerry noticed her discomfort and stopped walking.

“Mrs. Livingston, are you tired?”

“No.”

Madeleine shook her head and then suddenly thought of

something. “By the way, Gerry, I still don’t know where my office

is.”

Based on her experience from novels and TV dramas, her office

should be right next to Roderick’s.

“Don’t tell me you really put a tiny desk for me in Roderick’s

office.”

Gerry’s lips twitched.

“Mrs. Livingston, our company isn’t so cramped that we can’t

spare a single desk.”

At that, Madeleine let out an embarrassed laugh.

Novels and dramas were so full of lies!

Her office was set up in the secretaries‘ area of the CEO’s

office, but given her special status, they had arranged a private

corner for her.

Finally able to sit down and rest, Madeleine let out a long sigh

of relief.

She glanced toward the CEO’s office, not far away.

Roderick must be inside working. Since stepping into the

company, he seemed like a different person, exuding a cold,

unapproachable aura. That must be his working mode.

This was nothing like the “Ricki” she remembered from the

past.

“Did I get haunted? Or… is this actually a parallel world?”

Her imagination ran wild, and she thought to herself that it was indeed a real waste that she was not a playwright.

The morning passed quickly, and Madeleine managed to get

acquainted with Roderick’s secretaries.

The one in sportswear who spoke loudly was Teresa Cooper.

Next to her, the pale–skinned girl in a T–shirt and shorts was

Yvonne Osborn. The other two were Sophia Dunlap and Olivia

Kinney.

Yet Madeleine couldn’t shake the feeling that when she greeted

them, they were guarded against her.

When she asked if they had any work for her, the four of them

all answered in unison that there was nothing for her to do.

Was it because she was the CEO’s wife?

Yes, that had to be it.

Madeleine nodded to herself, completely unaware that the four

had already started a heated discussion in their private chat

group.

Teresa: “Stay alert, ladies. If Mrs. Livingston asks you for any

confidential documents, don’t you dare hand them over.”

Sophia: “Got it!”

Olivia: “Honestly, I don’t know what Mr. Livingston was thinking,

letting a spy into the company…”

Yvonne: “Don’t worry. She won’t last long here anyway.”

At that moment, Madeleine felt that chill again.

“Must’ve kicked the covers off last night and caught a cold.”

By noon, it was lunchtime.

Madeleine went over to their desks with a cheerful smile.

“Where do you usually go for lunch?”

“The company cafeteria, or the mall across the street.”

Her eyes lit up. “There’s a cafeteria here, too?”

The four girls exchanged glances, silently reading Madeleine’s

thoughts.
