The Heart Surgeon’s Last Patient Novel Chapter 43

Night Carved Paths Into Silence by Zyrel Ash 43

Chapter 43

Madeleine spread her hands helplessly, her eyes reddening, her

voice thick with emotion.

“Mom, Dad, you might not trust the Madeleine in her twenties,

but don’t you trust the eighteen–year–old me I used to be?”

The couple fell silent, exchanging a long, meaningful look.

“Are you truly certain you don’t want a divorce?” Clarissa asked

cautiously.

“Yes.”

Madeleine nodded firmly. She wouldn’t leave, at least not for

the child’s sake.

As for the future, it depended on Roderick. If he could accept a

marriage built on family bonds rather than romantic love,

perhaps they could make it work.

She just hoped they wouldn’t end up like his parents.

“Good… That’s good, then.”

Chapter 43

Clarissa kept nodding, dabbing her eyes with a tissue.

She was starting to believe the amnesia was real. She knew her

daughter, and the sincerity in her eyes was unmistakable.

Harold stood, claiming he’d fetch the children; but turned away quickly to wipe his own eyes.

When Kevin returned, he cautiously studied everyone’s faces.

Seeing them all smiling, he finally relaxed.

“Mommy, did you and Grandma and Grandpa make up?”

“Of course we did.”

“And you and Daddy? You won’t get divorced?”

Madeleine held out her pinky finger. “Never. I promise.”

A genuine smile finally broke through on Kevin’s face.

Roderick’s business dinner was not going well.

After several rounds of drinks, the other party suddenly made

outrageous demands, drastically raising their terms.

Chapter 43

Agitated, Roderick stepped out into the hallway for a moment

of quiet.

His phone buzzed with a WhatsApp notification. As he saw the

sender’s name, the tension in his brow eased slightly.

It was a photo from Madeleine, showing Harold happily packing

soup into a thermal container.

“You’re in luck. Dad made you some soup to help with the drinks. It’s amazing!”

A moment later, another message arrived.

“Don’t drink too much. Remember to eat something first. Don’t

drink on an empty stomach.”

Roderick stared at the messages, reading them over and over.

His heart, cold and overgrown with neglect, suddenly stirred

with new life.

She was concerned about him.

A faint smile touched his lips, but then a thought occurred to

him. He called home.

“Kirsten, did anyone visit the house today?”

Chapter 43

“Oh! How did you know, sir? Dr. Clark stopped by.”

Instantly, Roderick’s smile disappeared.

His initial suspicion was just a guess, based on Madeleine’s

mention of Nanette during their phone call.

This mannerism was strikingly similar to the teenage

Madeleine.

Back then, she’d disliked a two–faced underclassman. While she

never showed it openly, she would occasionally mutter under

her breath about her.

Only Roderick ever heard it.

He’d found it strange at first. The underclassman seemed

bubbly and often sought Madeleine out. Could she really dislike

her?

An investigation revealed the girl was a classic hypocrite,

specializing in being sweet to her face while spreading rumors

behind her back.

He discovered she was telling people Madeleine’s family wealth

came from her father being a greedy capitalist. Incensed, Roderick promptly exposed the girl’s exam cheating to the

school administration.

In the following days, he noticed Madeleine’s mood had visibly

improved.

Her current behavior was identical.

She disliked Nanette.

After getting the full story from Kirsten, Roderick frowned more

deeply.

“I understand. Kirsten, inform the gate. If Dr. Clark visits again,

call me immediately. She is not to be admitted without my

permission.”

“Very well, sir.”

Hanging up, Roderick reflected on his own reaction with a

sense of irony.

The previous Madeleine never considered his feelings. Yet here

he was, reacting so strongly simply because someone had

made her uncomfortable, as if their fragile connection needed

protection.

Connection?

Chapter 43

سال

What connection truly existed?

Even if her amnesia was genuine, even as her eighteen–year–old

self, she hadn’t cared for him then either.

“Roderick,” he muttered to himself, “you’re truly pathetic.”

The business dinner dragged on until eleven.

His clients heavily suggested moving to another venue for “adult entertainment“.

Battling his drunkenness, Roderick declined.

“My wife expects me home. My vice president will accompany you. Everything’s on me.”

Benny Garrison, a previous business contact, slung a drunken arm around him.

“Come on, man! Your wife? Her attention’s always been elsewhere, hasn’t it?”

Roderick’s polite smile vanished.

“Between friends now, women shouldn’t be indulged.

Chapter 41

“Dump her today, she’ll come crawling back tomorrow,

guaranteed.

“You look like you haven’t been with your wife in ages. Let me

show you something new.”

Roderick remained silent.

He removed Benny’s arm with cold precision, all traces of drunkenness gone from his eyes.

“My personal affairs don’t concern you.”

Turning to Gerry, he instructed, “Tell Legal Department the

contract stands as is.”

Benny’s assistant panicked. “No changes? We agreed on a five

percent increase! Are you reneging?”

“Not reneging.”

Roderick’s voice turned icy.

“We’re terminating cooperation.”
