Night Carved Paths Into Silence by Zyrel Ash ` 211
Chapter 211
The air conditioning in the luxury store was blasting, and
Madeleine unconsciously rubbed her arms as soon as she
walked in.
Rebecca rolled her eyes and tossed her the light jacket that was
draped over her arm.
Madeleine grinned as she wrapped the jacket around herself
and walked right over to Fiona.
Fiona turned her head and was a little surprised to see
Madeleine, and even more surprised when she saw her walking
straight towards her.
“Madeleine…?”
After her surprised utterance, Fiona realized it was
inappropriate and quickly corrected herself, “Mrs. Livingston,
Rebecca.”
“Just call me Madeleine. I don’t like being called Mrs.
Livingston.”
Madeleine shrugged, her fingers rubbing the cuff of her jacket.
Chapter 211
Fiona looked at her in surprise. “You don’t like being called Mrs.
Livingston?
Aren’t you on great terms with Mr. Livingston now? Why don’t
you like it?”
“Us having a good relationship and me not liking that title aren’t
mutually exclusive, are they?”
Fiona was even more confused.
In the circle of wealthy wives, so many women were proud to
take their husband’s name.
“I am my own person, not someone’s wife or someone’s
mother. I want people to know me for me. It’s as simple as
that.”
Fiona’s mouth fell slightly open.
Sometimes she felt that Madeleine was so naive she didn’t
seem like an adult.
But that naivety was exactly what she was missing now.
“Madeleine.”
Fiona nodded and said her name. “Are you guys here to shop
Chapter 211
for clothes too?”
“I guess so.”
Madeleine said, her gaze falling on the VIP fitting room that
Mary had just entered not far away.
“Here’s a piece of advice: stay away from Mary.”
“What?”
Fiona’s mind hadn’t, caught up yet; she was still thinking about
what Madeleine had just said.
When she snapped out of it, she looked up at Madeleine, her
eyes trembling.
“Why would you say that? Do you two know each other?”
“We do more than just know each other.”
Madeleine sneered. “Does she often check in on you,
pretending to be your friend?”
Fiona nodded blankly. “Yeah, actually, I haven’t known her for
that long.”
“She’s always following you around, eating and drinking without
Chapter 211
ever paying, and she subtly and not–so–subtly gets you to buy
her things.”
Fiona nodded again, “It wasn’t that much money…”
Madeleine was speechless.
“And the most important part.”
She narrowed her eyes slightly, “She often talked to you about
Edward, telling you every now and then how great he was, how
perfect you two were for each other, and after every time, you
felt like you liked Edward even more.”
The color drained from Fiona’s face.
Her manicured fingers unconsciously gripped the armrest, her
knuckles turning white.
Madeleine’s words were like a sharp knife, precisely dissecting
everything that had felt wrong to her lately.
“How could you know…”
Fiona’s voice trembled a little, “These things… I’ve never told
anyone.”
Madeleine’s gaze fell on Fiona’s trembling eyelashes, and she
Chapter 211
said softly, “Because she used to do the same thing to me.”
Mary’s exaggerated laughter came from the direction of the
fitting rooms, but to Fiona, the sound seemed to become very
distant.
Countless fragments flashed through her mind.
Mary was always in her ear, telling her how outstanding Edward
was, how perfect they were for each other, and that Fiona
should be more proactive…
“Have you noticed?”
Madeleine’s voice was soft, but every word was clear, “That
after every time you meet with her, your ‘liking‘ for Edward gets
even stronger?”
Fiona snapped her head up, her pupils constricting.
She remembered having afternoon tea with Mary last week,
when Mary mentioned out of nowhere that Edward liked the
gentle, domestic type, and that very night, on some strange impulse, she had signed up for a flower arrangement class.
“Yes… This, this isn’t normal.”
Chapter 211
Fiona’s voice was barely audible.
“Of course it’s not normal.”
“Then what’s the reason!”
Fiona nervously grabbed Madeleine’s hand, her eyes filled with
agitation.
“I’ve already hinted at the reason to you. I can’t say it plainly,
you’ll have to figure it out for yourself.”
She had already done all she could by telling her this much.
Fiona’s hand slowly loosened, her fingertips still trembling
slightly.
She looked down at her meticulously manicured nails and
thought how ridiculously fake it all was.
“I understand.”
She took a deep breath, her gaze clearing. “Thank you,
Madeleine.”
Madeleine shrugged, looking relaxed.
She turned to Rebecca and asked, “Rebecca, do you still want
Chapter 211
to look at the clothes here?”
“No, I don’t want any clothes that someone like that has tried
on.”
“Hehe, then let’s go to another store. I’ll buy them for you!”
“Alright, Madeleine, your company hasn’t even launched and
you’re already acting like a big shot.”
The two of them were already leaving arm in arm, laughing as
they spoke.
