The Heart Surgeon’s Last Patient Novel Chapter 196

Night Carved Paths Into Silence by Zyrel Ash `196

Chapter 196

“Earlier, for saying you were my girlfriend without asking you

first.”

Hearing this, Rebecca gave an awkward laugh. “I understand.

You were trying to help me out of a jam, Professor Shaw.”

“Yeah.”

He nodded, “Girls get objectified easily at these kinds of events.

I didn’t want them looking at you like that, so I took matters into

my own hands.”

“It’s really fine. You don’t need to apologize.”

Rebecca’s grip on the steering wheel tightened slightly, her

fingertips growing warm.

The car fell silent, the only sound being the occasional

mechanical voice of the GPS.

Adrian leaned back in his seat with his eyes closed, resting. The

alcohol made his breathing a little heavier than usual.

The light and shadows from the streetlights flickered across his

chiseled profile through the window.

While waiting at a red light, Rebecca couldn’t resist stealing a

glance at him from the corner of her eye.

He had long eyelashes, a high–bridged nose, and a sharp, clean

jawline. His shirt collar was slightly open, his Adam’s apple

moving gently with his breathing.

He really was handsome.

Rebecca looked away, making her silent assessment.

On the drive, Rebecca wanted to speak up several times, but

she didn’t want to disturb Adrian’s rest. She was torn.

They were now only a five–minute drive from the destination.

“Professor Shaw.”

Adrian slowly opened his eyes, which still held a hint of

drunkenness.

“What is it?

Are we there yet?”

“Almost there.”

Adrian nodded, pressing his brow. “You should take the car

back. It’s late, and hailing a cab isn’t safe.”

“Okay.”

Four minutes left.

Rebecca took a deep breath and finally spoke up: “Professor Shaw, I’ve actually always wanted to ask… why did you choose

to do research at a university?”

Adrian turned to her, a hint of confusion in his expression.

“Is there something wrong with doing research at the

university?”

“That’s not what I meant… It’s just, for a top–tier talent like you, wouldn’t you earn more if you chose to partner with a

company?”

Adrian thought for a moment, then chuckled. “More than just higher. It’d be a fortune compared to what I make now.”

“Yeah, I’ve heard that several companies in the industry are offering you huge salaries.”

Adrian turned his head with a faint smile. “Like the Whitman

group, for instance?”

His sudden words startled Rebecca, and her hands slipped on

the steering wheel, causing the car to swerve.

She tried hard to calm herself down, keeping her eyes on the

road ahead.

“The Whitman group… is a pretty good pharmaceutical R&D

company, and it has some well–resourced research labs.”

Rebecca praised her own company without batting an eye.

She wasn’t wrong. Although the Whitman group wasn’t a

market leader, it had always been generous with its R&D

investments.

“Yes, the projects the Whitman group has been working on are

quite good. I’ve seen them, and they have a lot of potential in

the biopharmaceutical industry.”

Rebecca felt a surge of excitement, and her palms started to

sweat on the steering wheel.

“So, has Professor Shaw ever considered joining? A powerful

partnership could create some new sparks.”

Hearing this, Adrian let out a soft chuckle.

“Rebecca…” he began slowly, “I’ve considered what you’ve said,

of course. I just feel like I’m still missing a compelling reason to

convince me.”

“What reason?”

Rebecca’s heart began to race.

If she just knew the reason, she could tailor her approach and

convince Adrian.

He was silent for a moment, then opened the car window. The

night wind rushed in, cool and sobering.

“Professor Shaw…”

“Rebecca, I’m drunk.”

Adrian closed his eyes and said no more, effectively cutting off

whatever Rebecca was about to say.

She was very disappointed, and it showed plainly in her eyes.

But looking at his increasingly flushed face, Rebecca’s feelings became complicated.

What was she doing?

He drank so much and felt so sick all for her.

But all she could think about was the company, about profits…

Rebecca, oh Rebecca, sometimes you really are heartless.

Sighing softly, Rebecca turned on the hazard lights and drove

into the underground garage of Adrian’s apartment building.

“We’re here.”

Adrian’s eyes were faintly bloodshot. He spoke in a hoarse

voice, “Thanks.”

Rebecca hesitated for a moment, then unbuckled her seatbelt.

“I’ll walk you up.”

Adrian and Rebecca looked at each other across the car.

“Can I ask you a question?”

Adrian’s question caught her completely off guard. All Rebecca

could do was nod.

“You’ve been sticking around me all this time. What’s your

goal?”

“My goal… I… didn’t I tell you? I really admire you, Professor

Shaw. I think your research project…”

“Rebecca, I’m not an idiot.”

Adrian’s words threw Rebecca’s mind into chaos.
