Night Carved Paths Into Silence by Zyrel Ash 16
Roderick suggested, “Time for dinner.”
Madeleine rolled her eyes at him.
“Ricki, do you begrudge your money? What a miser!”
Roderick fell silent.
With his head bowed, he clicked on his phone screen for a
moment. Then, a notification came on Madeleine’s phone.
“Eh? A transfer from you? Wait. Am I in a dream? 8 million?”
Madeleine’s eyes widened.
Covering her mouth with one hand, she felt like fainting with shock and couldn’t help staggering back.
Was inflation so serious in 2025? Did anyone have 8 million?
As far as she remembered, her family and Roderick’s were both middle–class.
They were only richer than ordinary families, far from the top.
Chapter 16
Right now, however, Madeleine felt she’d underestimated
Roderick.
He’d become much more powerful.
She was a little dejected at the restaurant.
Over the years, Roderick had made progress and succeeded.
On the contrary, she lost everything.
She had no career. Even her ballet, to which she’d devoted over
ten years, was stagnant.
Eight years had passed, but her life was going nowhere.
Things were even worse. At least, her family wasn’t broke eight
years ago.
Sadness–driven, Madeleine bowed her head, her eyes red.
“Mommy.”
Kevin, sitting beside her, looked up at her and asked, “What’s
wrong? Did I upset you?”
Madeleine was surprised. “Kev, why do you think so? I’m blue because of something that happened to me. It has nothing to do with you.”
Chapter 16.
“But I was a bad boy before,” Kevin said cautiously. “I often upset you before. Daddy upset you, too.”
Madeleine felt terrible. She stroked Kevin’s cheeks caringly.
“Don’t think that again. You did nothing wrong. You don’t have
to feel bad, OK?”
With gleaming eyes, Kevin nodded hard.
His bright smile swept away the gloom engulfing Madeleine’s
heart. With Kevin in her arms, she flipped through the menu,
ready to order dishes.
Suddenly, a woman’s voice came from outside the door. “Eddie,
let’s eat here. This place looks nice.”
Eddie?
Madeleine’s expression changed, and she stiffened.
You gotta be kidding me!
Madeleine and Roderick almost raised their heads
simultaneously. Only she turned her head toward the door while
he looked at her.
The newcomer was indeed Edward.
Chapter 16
Compared to his picture, he hadn’t changed much, around 1.8 m tall, in a gray suit. A woman with short hair was with him.
Madeleine fixed her eyes on him, trying to connect this man with the poor, timid village boy she remembered.
Wow, how time changed everything.
With Madeleine’s support, Edward had made a fortune and become an overnight millionaire. He strutted around now.
Thinking he was one of the culprits making her family bankrupt,
Madeleine gritted her teeth. Hatred was written all over her
face.
Roderick thought she was jealous.
Sure enough, she was attracted to Edward. She couldn’t stand
seeing him with another woman.
What next?
Was she gonna confront him and make a scene regardless of
the presence of her husband and son?
Roderick tightened his grip on the fork so much that his knuckles turned white.
Chapter 76
“Ricki!” Madeleine withdrew her gaze and called him angrily.
Roderick looked at her, as if waiting for the death penalty.
“Another set meal for me. I’ll eat to my heart’s content.”
Transforming anger into appetite. That made sense.
Roderick’s brows knitted more tightly, as if he didn’t get
Madeleine’s point.
“What’s the matter? You look absent–minded. Hey, why aren’t
you eating? Let me have a bite of your food.”
Madeleine took a lump of meat from his plate with the fork and
ate it.
Her eyes brightened immediately. “Yummy. It’s tastier than my food. I want yours.”
With food in her mouth, she took another bite.
“You haven’t changed at all, always keeping good food for yourself. I’m your wife now. You should take care of me.”
While speaking, she filled her mouth with food. With bulging cheeks, she looked like a hamster.
Chapter 16
Roderick and Kevin stopped to watch her eat.
Kevin even pushed his plate toward her. “Mommy, slow down.
You can have mine, too.”
“Oh, sweetie, Mommy won’t take your food. You eat.”
Then, the smile on her face faded. She stared at Roderick.
“Ricki! Didn’t you hear me? Order a share of your set meal for
me.”
Roderick looked at her for a while. He couldn’t figure her out. Just as before, this girl was moody.
He gestured for the waiter to come over and ordered another share for her. Not far from them, Edward finally looked at them.
He was at first surprised and then doubtful.
Was he mistaken?
No way. That woman was indeed Madeleine, who had been pestering him.
She had wanted to see him two days ago. Tired of her harassment, he had decided to go.
