The Heart Surgeon’s Last Patient Novel Chapter 152

Night Carved Paths Into Silence by Zyrel Ash 152

Madeleine’s face instantly turned red. She subconsciously

tightened her grip on his suit lapel, only to hear a soft chuckle

from above her.

“What are you laughing at?”

Roderick looked down at her, the fragmented light of the

streetlamps reflected in his eyes. “Looks like the restaurant I

picked for you was pretty good.”

Madeleine froze, then realized he was saying she’d gotten

heavier from eating too much. She lightly punched his shoulder

in annoyance.

“What are you, a human scale? You can even feel that.”

“I hold you every day. How could I not feel it?”

That sentence was like a piece of candy, unexpectedly

sweetening her heart.

Roderick told her to hold the umbrella properly, then turned and

nodded to the secretaries as a farewell before walking into the

curtain of rain with her in his arms.

Chapter 152

Suppressed squeals came from the secretaries behind them:

“Ahhh, Mr. Livingston is so smooth!”

“Chase is blushing.”

“This is such a fairy–tale romance!”

Madeleine held the umbrella with one hand and turned her

head, not forgetting to wave goodbye to the secretaries.

When her gaze swept over Fiona, she noticed her expression

wasn’t great, and she couldn’t tell what she was thinking.

Fiona’s eyes followed Madeleine the whole time. She watched

as Roderick carefully placed Madeleine in the car, his gaze filled

with an unconcealable love.

It was completely different from the rumors.

The two women behind Fiona heard what the four secretaries

up front were saying and couldn’t help but roll their eyes.

“Tch, fairy–tale romance. Wasn’t Madeleine just Mr. Carroll’s

people–pleaser before?”

“A real fairy–tale romance is someone like Fiona and Mr. Carroll,

okay? Can’t they get some taste?”

Chapter 152

Fiona’s already sinking heart now felt as if it had been dealt a

heavy blow.

Were she and Edward in a fairy–tale romance?

But she asked herself, if Edward had been the one to show up,

he would never cherish her the way Roderick cherished

Madeleine.

Her companion’s harsh taunts faded in her ears, and all she could see was the gentle profile of Roderick as he leaned over

to fasten Madeleine’s seatbelt.

“Fiona?

Why aren’t you talking?”

Her companion nudged her shoulder. “Don’t tell me you were

actually grossed out by that phony couple?”

Fiona shot her a cold, sideways glance.

“Is it that hard to shut your mouth?”

…

It had started to rain, and the temperature had dropped quite a

bit. The driver turned on the heat, and the chill inside the car

instantly vanished.

Roderick reached out and brushed back a stray strand of

Madeleine’s hair.

“Let me tell you what just happened, that Fio-”

“You really didn’t drink?”

Roderick suddenly asked, raising an eyebrow in doubt.

Madeleine’s eyes widened.

“I didn’t. How can you still not believe me?”

“Then why is your face so red?”

“Is it?”

Madeleine reached up to touch her face, realizing her cheeks

were hot.

“It’s probably because the heat is on.”

Roderick said nothing, but suddenly cupped the back of her

head and lowered his to kiss her.

“Warmed up…”

Chapter 152

Madeleine instinctively grabbed his shirt, her eyelashes

trembling as her heart began to race.

The driver’s right there in the front!

Three seconds later, Roderick released her, his thumb brushing

the corner of her reddened lips. “You really didn’t drink.”

Madeleine’s eyes widened.

You little rascal, checking with a kiss, are you!

Grinding her teeth, Madeleine suddenly leaned forward and bit

down on Roderick’s smiling, upturned lips.

It was a quick, forceful bite. As Roderick winced in pain, the

culprit had already pulled back and sat down properly.

A closer look revealed her face was full of glee from her

successful scheme.

Roderick didn’t know whether to laugh or cry, suddenly finding

her adorable.

“Alright, no more messing around.”

Roderick patted her head. “Tell me, what happened earlier?”

Chapter 152

Madeleine talked the whole way, not only explaining what

happened but also adding some of her own thoughts.

“This Fiona, she’s a strange one. Not completely bad, but not

good enough either. I don’t get her.”

“Actually, that’s a true reflection of most people.”

Roderick’s tone was gentle, his voice low.

“People like Fiona might not be inherently bad, but she’s selfish

enough to do whatever it takes when her own interests are at

stake.”

“Human nature is complex. Stay away from her if you run into

her in the future.”

Madeleine nodded obediently.

Of course she had to stay away. What if she got dragged into

the main narrative control again? That would be a disaster.

On the way back, Madeleine saw a dessert shop she liked and

asked the driver to pull over.

“I’m planning to buy this for Kev, you know. We went out for

good food today without him, what if he feels left out?
