Night Carved Paths Into Silence by Zyrel Ash 139
Roderick’s gaze never left Madeleine as he nodded slightly.
“Thank you, Mrs. Miller.”
Rebecca suddenly mentioned she had some business to
discuss with Roderick, and the two of them went to the living
room.
Taking this opportunity, Mrs. Miller wanted to chat a bit more
with Madeleine.
“Shall we go sit for a bit?”
“Okay.”
Madeleine nodded, an inexplicable nervousness starting to
build inside her.
She was still shaken by their last conversation with Mrs. Miller;
in her mind, the old Mrs. Miller had always tried to set her up
with Edward for no reason, like a hand pushing her onto that
very track.
And the question she had asked last time had inadvertently
woken Mrs. Miller up.
Chapter 139
So, had Mrs. Miller awakened too?
This question had been swirling in Madeleine’s mind for a long
time. If that was the case, she needed to confirm whether Mrs.
Miller was suffering from any side effects.
She followed Mrs. Miller to the tea room and found that the tea
snacks on the table had been replaced with soft cake and nuts.
Outside the window, the setting sun filtered through the sheer
curtains, casting mottled patterns of light and shadow between
them.
Mrs. Miller poured her a cup of herbal tea and suddenly said,
“Maddie, about last time… I need to apologize to you.”
Madeleine’s heart skipped a beat, and she almost dropped her
teacup.
“It was like I was possessed back then.”
Mrs. Miller shook her head with a wry smile. “I always felt that you and that boy, Edward, were a match made in heaven. Now
that I think about it, it’s just…”
She sighed and shook her head.
Chapter 139
“I’d never wondered why I thought that way before. But when
you asked me last time, it hit me. Right, why did I want you to be
with Edward?”
Madeleine’s hand tightened around her cup.
“Mrs. Miller, did you know Edward before?”
“Well… not really ‘knew‘ him. I met Edward once in Tuscany,
years ago. He was just a poor student then. He was out of
money and people were giving him trouble, so I stepped in and
helped him.”
Madeleine understood.
Another NPC who bails out the male lead…
So Mrs. Miller probably wasn’t too affected by the narrative
control because her involvement with Edward wasn’t that deep.
“Sigh, I don’t know what it was. Maybe I used to think that
Edward was a nice boy, and that there was nothing wrong with
you liking him and pursuing love, but now…”
Mrs. Miller’s lips curved into a slight smile. “Maddie, who is it
that you really like?”
Chapter 139
Pulled from her thoughts, Madeleine’s face immediately turned
red.
“I, uh, well, I’ll just have some tea.”
Seeing her stammer and falter, Mrs. Miller, with all her
experience, understood immediately.
She smiled and nodded.
“I only married Roderick’s father the year before last, so I don’t
know much about your past, but I heard from him that you two
were very much in love. I don’t know why things turned out the
way they did, but at least things are good now.”
Mrs. Miller patted Madeleine’s hand. “I can tell, Roderick really
cares about you.”
Madeleine’s heart warmed.
“He does.”
Roderick had never been stingy or tried to hide his love for her.
…
In the living room, Roderick was talking business with Rebecca when he seemed to sense something and zoned out for a

moment.
Rebecca waved her hand in front of his face.
“What’s with you?”
“Thinking about my wife.”
Rebecca: …
Roderick was never one to hide things from her and Bradley; he
just said whatever came to mind. If he said he was thinking
about his wife, he really meant it.
The problem was, they’d only been apart for less than two
minutes!
Rebecca rolled her eyes to the heavens and took a deep breath.
“I seriously can’t with you. Let’s get back to business!
The group’s stock dropped the other day because of that news
about Nanette, right? And the mole in the company is stirring up
trouble again. When are we finally going to catch them? I can’t
take it anymore, I’ve already lost a lot of money.”
“Soon.”
Chapter 139
Roderick narrowed his eyes. “When does the bidding for the
Northgate Tech Park project start?”
“The end of this month.”
Roderick nodded. “Good. Then we’ll close the net at the end of
the month.”
Dinner was specially prepared at home by a State Banquet chef, and Madeleine’s eyes were dazzled by the table of exquisite
dishes.
She sat beside Roderick, and seeing that everyone else was just talking and not touching their forks, she had to sit still as well.
Owen was still talking about what happened last time, expressing his gratitude for Rebecca and Bradley’s help.
