The Girl in the Shadows Novel Chapter 5

Loomwood Galleries Framed Pilgrim Murals by Iris Vaughn 5

Nina froze, looking at Isabelle with complete confusion.

Isabelle stirred her coffee with a small spoon, her mood instantly sinking.

“I have a congenital heart disease. I won’t live past 25, and my 25th birthday is in less than two weeks.”

Those words hit Nina like a bombshell. She gripped the hem of her skirt tightly, not understanding why Isabelle was telling her all this.

“Actually, I lied to you that day. I’m not Sean’s sister. Sean and I used to date. I broke up with him when I had to go abroad for treatment.”

This was all new to Nina. She listened quietly, not saying a word.

“Later, I heard from friends that he was in a really bad state, so I used suicide to force him to start a new life. Then, I heard you two got together. I was very happy for you.”

“I don’t have long to live. I want you two to be happy together, but I can’t change Sean’s mind right now. So I also want to apologize for coming here. I know my arrival has caused you a lot of trouble.”

After hearing Isabelle’s words, Nina was silent.

She vaguely remembered that day at the airport, her loud crying, and the piece of candy that girl had handed her.

When it came down to it, there was no right or wrong in this whole affair.

Nina slowly looked up, her eyes meeting Isabelle’s with a sense of calm. “I forgive you.”

Hearing this, Isabelle was overjoyed and broke into a radiant smile again.

The crowd around them erupted in noise. Someone had smashed a glass, and it shattered in front of Isabelle with a loud crash.

Almost instantly, Isabelle’s face turned a ghastly white, and she clutched her chest tightly.

Seeing this, Nina scrambled to her feet and rushed to Isabelle’s side. “Isabelle, are you okay? Isabelle!”

Isabelle’s lips were pale. She pointed shakily at her bag, “Medicine… in the bag…”

With that, she passed out.

The surrounding noise was a clamor, but Nina could only hear her own heartbeat, growing louder and louder.

With trembling hands, she pulled the bottle of pills from the bag.

Just as she was about to give the medicine to Isabelle, she was shoved hard, falling heavily to the ground. Her palm

was instantly pierced by the broken glass, gushing blood.

Nina struggled to look up, her eyes meeting Sean’s icy gaze.

He looked at Nina coldly, his voice hoarse. “I never thought you could be such a vicious person. That’s right, I love her. Even if something really happens to Isabelle, I’ll devote my whole life to her. Are you satisfied now?”

“If anything happens to Isabelle, I will never let you get away with it.”

Sean’s words were like a sharp blade plunging into Nina’s heart, leaving it covered in wounds.

She looked dazed, wanting to defend herself. “I didn’t…”

But Sean wouldn’t listen to her explanation. He swept Isabelle up in his arms and ran out.

The people around them watched the drama unfold, pointing and whispering at Nina on the floor.

She used to be terrified of being the subject of public gossip, but now, for some reason, she just felt numb.

She slowly got to her feet, her injured hand hanging at her side, blood dripping onto the floor.

Ignoring the stares, Nina slowly walked out of the coffee shop and took a cab to the hospital.

After the doctor bandaged her up, he told her, “Don’t get it wet for a week.”

Nina nodded, and when she got back to her apartment, she found an unexpected guest.

Sean was sitting on the sofa, his long legs crossed and his expression dark.

When he saw Nina, his eyes held a strange emotion. “What’s this about?”

Nina followed his gaze to the property deed, and her heart tightened. “I don’t like this house anymore.”

Hearing her say that, Sean felt something he couldn’t quite describe. This was the first gift he had given Nina, and she had taken such good care of every part of the house.

Now that she said she didn’t like it anymore, Sean felt surprisingly uneasy, but he couldn’t quite put his finger on what the feeling was.

A heavy feeling.

Sean nodded, his expression a bit awkward. “Let’s cancel the wedding.”

In that instant, Nina felt a part of her heart go empty.

But then she smiled and nodded. “Okay.”

Seeing that she wasn’t sad as he’d expected, but instead seemed relieved, Sean felt that indescribable, stifling annoy- ance again.

He pinched the bridge of his nose. “Isabelle told me. It wasn’t you. She’s not well right now, and I don’t have the ener- gy to get married at the moment.”

Nina was silent, finding the whole thing absurd.

But in the end, she didn’t say anything.

What was the point in saying anything?
