The Girl in the Shadows Novel Chapter 4

Loomwood Galleries Framed Pilgrim Murals by Iris Vaughn 4

Chapter 4

Nina didn’t know how she got back to her apartment, one hand holding her heels, the other clutching the photo to her

chest.

The photo got wet anyway, the beautiful woman’s face blurring.

Nina knelt on the cold floor and wailed, repeatedly wiping the rain from the photo, but her own tears kept falling on it.

She cried until she couldn’t breathe, collapsing to the floor, choking on her sobs.

There was a sound at the door. The next moment, a pair of black leather shoes appeared in Nina’s view.

Sean looked at the woman collapsed on the floor, his brow twitching.

He lifted Nina up, set her on the sofa, his eyes filled with frustration. “I just didn’t drive you to the Collins‘ place. Do you have to be this dramatic?”

Was it really that big of a deal?

Nina realized in that moment that the man she loved had changed, so much that she could barely recognize him.

Before leaving the Collins family’s place, she’d heard the story of Isabelle and Sean. The perfect couple, but for some reason, they broke up.

People said that when they were dating, they were the couple everyone in Los Angeles envied; Sean took every little thing Isabelle casually mentioned to heart.

Nina looked at the man in front of her and smiled bitterly. The difference between being loved and not being loved was really so obvious.

Even though Sean had been good to her for the past three years, she could always feel that he seemed to be looking through her, remembering someone else.

Nina pulled away from him, her expression distant. “Yes, it is.”

Sean loosened his tie, looking annoyed and weary. “It’s such a trivial thing.”

With that, Sean stood up and left, the door slamming shut with a loud bang.

Nina froze for a second, and soon after, her phone buzzed with a photo from Jessica. She stared at the picture as a tear slid from her eye and dripped onto the screen.

Sean was holding a huge bouquet of roses, standing outside Isabelle’s building. But Isabelle wouldn’t see him.

That night, Nina barely slept.

Chapter 4

This apartment was a gift from Sean, meant to be her safety net. But Nina didn’t want it anymore.

Anything that didn’t truly belong to her, she no longer wanted.

Nina took the deed to the land registry office and had the name changed to Sean’s. She’s giving back everything he gave her.

Staring at the green trees outside, Nina zoned out. It had been so long since she’d really taken in the view outside.

Her phone buzzed. It was a friend request from Isabelle.

After some hesitation, Nina accepted. Isabelle asked to meet her at a coffee shop.

When Nina arrived, Isabelle was already seated and waiting.

Seeing her, she broke into a wide smile. “Hi, Nini, what can I get you to drink?”

Nina froze, then slowly walked over, pulled out a chair, and sat down.

It had been a long time since anyone had called her that. People usually called her Nina, while the Collins family called her “the illegitimate daughter.” Only Sean ever called her Nini.

But now it seemed it was just his way of remembering Isabelle through her.

“Anything’s fine.”

Perhaps noticing her weary expression, Isabelle sighed softly.

“Nini, I’m so sorry.”
