The Girl in the Shadows Novel Chapter 23

Loomwood Galleries Framed Pilgrim Murals by Iris Vaughn 23

Sean saw her expression gradually soften and knew his gamble had paid off.

He placed the pocket watch in Nina’s palm. He wanted to say something, but in the end, he said nothing.

Nina didn’t know where he had found this pocket watch, and tears instantly welled up in her eyes.

She slowly sank to the floor, pressing the pocket watch tightly against her heart, her voice choked with sobs.

“Mom, I’m begging you. Please watch over Zackery from heaven and make sure he gets through this.

I’m willing to give up everything.”

Hearing Nina murmuring prayers like a small animal, Sean suddenly regretted giving her the pocket watch.

But he finally sighed. This was what he owed her.

The light above the operating room went out. Nina shot to her feet, grabbing the doctor who had just come out, her eyes red.

“Doctor, how is my husband?”

The word “husband” stung Sean again. He watched Nina’s worried expression, a sour feeling in his chest.

If it had been him, even if he had died, Nina wouldn’t have even blinked, let alone worried about him like this.

The doctor reassured Nina, “The patient is out of danger. You can go see him in a little while.”

A wave of relief washed over her, and Nina nodded firmly.

Just then, she narrowed her eyes.

The car’s brakes had failed suddenly, but Deegan had driven that car just yesterday, and there was nothing wrong with

Nina called Deegan.

“Dad, check things at home. Zackery and I were in a car accident. The brakes on the car suddenly failed.”

Deegan’s expression turned serious. “Okay, leave this to me. You just focus on taking care of Zackery.”

Zackery hadn’t woken up yet. Nina glanced at him through the window, her expression dazed.

When she turned back, she looked at Sean coldly.

“It was you, wasn’t it.”

The sudden accusation made Sean’s chest tighten, but he had no evidence to prove his innocence. He had indeed been lurking around The Bronner Estate recently, which made him a prime suspect.

He couldn’t help but defend himself, “Nina, it wasn’t me. I would never want to put you in danger, believe me.”

But when he saw Nina’s cold eyes, Sean understood. She was convinced he had done it.

A wave of madness washed over him, and Sean couldn’t help but say coldly, “I wouldn’t stoop to something like this. Instead of worrying about me doing that, you should be worrying about me tying you up in a room and never letting you leave.”

As soon as he said that, Nina was even more certain it was him.

“You’re a lunatic. You’re capable of anything.”

After Nina said this, Sean’s face darkened.

He looked at Nina, then gave a self–deprecating laugh and turned to leave decisively.

“I’ll make you see whether I did this or not!”

The man’s low growl echoed in the hallway.

Watching Sean’s retreating back, Nina made no move to stop him.

In her mind, Sean was no different from a madman.

A madman is capable of anything.

Walking into the hospital room and looking at the still–unconscious Zackery, a wave of guilt washed over her.

She held Zackery’s cold hand and gently kissed it.

Her voice was very quiet, and very slow.

“Zackery, you can’t leave me. You have to wake up soon. There’s still so much I haven’t told you.”

“You always asked me if I liked you, and I never answered. Because I was also afraid this was just a dream I would wake up from.”

“But today, I can tell you clearly, I love you. Zackery, I love you. You can’t leave me all alone.”

At the door of the hospital room, Helen wiped away a tear and pulled Deegan away.

“Let’s give the kids some time.”
