The Girl in the Shadows Novel Chapter 18

Loomwood Galleries Framed Pilgrim Murals by Iris Vaughn 18

The wedding was held on a specially chosen lucky day.

The Bronner Estate really valued Nina, so they threw an incredibly grand wedding.

Nina’s wedding gown was custom–made, and every single diamond on it was from Deegan’s collection from his youth. The sparkling diamonds were embedded in the skirt, shining with a dazzling fire.

Zackery wore a sharply tailored black suit, the straight shoulder line making him look even taller and more upright, and he unconsciously rubbed the edges of a velvet box, his fingertips turning white from the pressure.

He couldn’t help checking himself for any imperfections, and as he watched Nina about to walk towards him, Zackery felt both happy and nervous.

Because Nina and David had a terrible relationship, they didn’t even invite him to the wedding.

The one walking Nina slowly up to the altar was Deegan; it was Helen’s idea.

Deegan seemed to sense Nina’s anxiety, and he glanced sideways at her–the woman who was about to become his child–with a gentle and kind expression.

“Nina, if that brat Zackery bullies you in the future, just tell us. We’ll take care of him.”

Nina was touched by his words, and her eyes reddened.

It felt like something was caught in her throat, and she struggled to speak.

“Okay, Dad.”

A huge smile spread across Deegan’s face.

He had always wanted a daughter, but his wife’s health was severely damaged after giving birth to Zackery, and he couldn’t bear to let her risk it again.

Nina walked slowly towards the altar, her gloved hands trembling slightly.

The wounds on her ten fingers were almost healed, but her nails hadn’t grown back, leaving ten ugly scars.

So Zackery found her breathable mesh gloves to help her wounds heal.

Nina still remembered how heartbroken Zackery looked when he saw her wounds.

Nina’s hand was placed in Zackery’s. Deegan looked at his son and said solemnly, “Zackery, I’m telling you this as Nina’s father. I hope you will always remember the responsibility on your shoulders. Love her and respect her. I also hope you will hold firm to your principles.”

His words made Nina burst into tears, and she quickly wiped them away, not wanting anyone to see.

Zackery wiped away the tears on her other cheek before replying solemnly to his father, “Dad, I know what I need to do from now on.

I also hope you and Mom will treat Nina as your own daughter, to love and cherish her.”

Deegan was so exasperated by his son that he laughed. The little brat was lecturing him.

But Deegan also understood it was because Zackery truly loved Nina.

He promised, “Okay.”

Nearby, Jessica raised her phone and captured the moment. For some reason, her eyes grew moist too.

Seeing Nina happy, Jessica was actually quite pleased.

This was the deal she made with Zackery. She would help him marry Nina, and in return, he would grant her one fa-

vor.

She hadn’t decided on the favor yet, but Jessica knew Sean was not a good person, and back then, Nina was just too stubborn.

As a last resort, she had her father help her force Nina to leave.

Zackery was a good man, at least much better than Sean.

Besides, Zackery had loved Nina for so many years; he knew better how to cherish her.

But sometimes, Jessica wondered if what she did was right.

Seeing how happy Nina was, all her doubts disappeared.

She whispered to herself, “Nina, congratulations on your wedding.”

Let the older generation’s conflicts stay with them. From now on, they all needed to live their own happy lives.

As if sensing it, Nina looked over at Jessica. The moment their eyes met, Nina gave her a big smile.

She mouthed the words, “Thank you, Jessica.”

When Jessica made out the words, tears instantly welled up in her eyes.

She couldn’t bring herself to look at Nina’s eyes again, so she lowered her head and wiped away her tears.

Nina and Zackery went from table to table making toasts. When they got to Jessica, Nina pulled out two gifts from behind her and placed them in front of her.

“This is a gift from me, and this is a gift from Zackery.”

Looking at the two thick gifts, Jessica choked up, “Nina… Zackery.”

Zackery was thrilled and toasted her with several drinks in a row, getting Jessica all woozy.

Nina had told him that Jessica was basically the only family she had left in the world.

Even though they’d had their unpleasant moments and conflicts, Jessica wasn’t a bad person deep down.

Nina couldn’t stand it anymore and pulled Zackery’s arm. “If you get her drunk, what’s she going to do when she feels

sick later?”

Zackery had to stop.

A slightly woozy Jessica heard Nina worrying about her and gave Nina a goofy grin.

Nina paused for a moment, then ruffled her hair.

Just then, there was a commotion at the entrance.

Everyone turned to look.
