“I once asked my dad about it. Since he had Marcus and me, why did he still need to adopt Maggie? Dad said both Marcus and I are too soft. Without someone strong to support us, the Gills would end up just as badly as the Lincolns, the Harrisons, and the Bartons.” Maya sat on the bed and lay back with a sigh.
She had never understood why the feuds between wealthy families never seemed to end.
“Ever since I can remember, my dad retreated to Gill Manor under the guise of retirement. He acted like he was stepping away from the world, but really, he just wanted to avoid conflict. He just wanted to make sure the Gills didn’t get dragged down like the other three families.” Sometimes, Maya wished she could have been just a regular girl from an ordinary family. Life would have been so much simpler and happier, instead of being filled with endless scheming and plotting.
“Marcus was born to be the Gills‘ heir. Maggie’s whole purpose is to back him up. And me? I was born to be a bargaining chip for a marriage alliance.” Maya knew exactly where she stood and what she was worth.
She didn’t want to rebel like some spoiled heiresses, but she wasn’t about to roll over and do exactly as her family wanted, either. She was determined to take control of her own fate.
That was why she was willing to work with Denton.
Marriage was always a gamble anyway. At least by working with Denton, she could control her life to a certain extent.
“Your dad groomed a capable helper for you and Marcus… but you’d better be careful. Sometimes the helper turns on you,” Denton said quietly, standing by the window.
Maya looked over at Denton. “You noticed too, right? Maggie isn’t as simple as she seems.”
Denton nodded.
Maggie always put on a friendly front, but one could never miss the ambition in her eyes.
When a woman was obviously ambitious, she would stop at nothing to get what she wanted.
There was no way a woman like that would ever settle for being just someone else’s tool.

News that Adriana and Justin were living together was already out. Barton Group was unusually quiet these days. Everyone seemed to agree that once Jeremy’s mourning period ended, Adriana and Justin would get engaged.
After all, Justin had a reputation for keeping away from women. The fact that he was living with Adriana at the Barton Estate meant their relationship was special.
“Justin agreed?” Savannah looked at Danielle, excited. “So Justin is actually willing to put off marrying Adriana for Susan?”

Danielle nodded. “Justin said as long as we can prove this is really Susan, he’s willing to delay marrying Adriana for now.”
Savannah smiled. “That’s perfect… As long as this ‘Susan‘ captures Justin’s heart and word gets out that he’s about to marry someone else, Adriana’s authority at Barton Group will be gone.”
Danielle nodded, a sly smile on her lips. “Justin wants to meet Susan, so I’ve arranged for them to meet tonight. I’ve got reporters staked out. By tomorrow morning, news of Justin meeting his childhood first love will blow up in the media… I want to see how Adriana can possibly keep her grip on Barton Group when that happened.”
The two women exchanged knowing smiles.
Dealing with Adriana was the top priority for them now.
“The finals for the design competition are tomorrow. If we hit Adriana with something fatal while Barton Group is already unstable, her reputation will be completely destroyed.” Savannah grinned, reminding Danielle that the design competition was the perfect time to crush Adriana.
“Don’t worry, I’ve got it covered. Tomorrow, I’ll make sure Adriana is completely disgraced.” Danielle narrowed her eyes.
She had already sent someone to steal Adriana’s original design draft. Once all the files were in her hands, she was going to ruin Adriana for good during the competition.
She would make sure that Adriana could never work in the architecture design industry again.
“We’ll see how it goes. We’ll all be there tomorrow, watching the drama unfold.” Savannah took a sip of tea.
Once Justin’s scandal broke in the morning, it would mess with Adriana’s head.
If she then got accused of plagiarism and forced to withdraw from the competition, she’d never regain her footing at Barton Group.
This year, the finals of the architecture design competition were being held in Haldoria. Only the best entries made it this far.
Adriana’s work and Danielle’s looked suspiciously alike, but not a single judge had brought it up before the finals–which only meant Danielle had already bribed the organizer and the judges.
Danielle had covered every angle and was convinced she’d ruin Adriana today.
Adriana might have returned to the Bartons as Nicole and become their only heir, but the higher–ups at Barton Group still didn’t respect her. Danielle and Chandler saw this as their chance to take her down.
They were on the hunt for any opportunity to deliver fatal blows to Adriana–until she was finally pushed out of the Barton Group for good.
