Their reckoning had only just started.

There was no rush. The truth would come out little by little. The law wouldn’t let anyone off, and she would never allow murderers to walk free.

…

At the funeral, guests came to pay their respects. Cars were lined up outside the Barton Estate.

“Justin!” Savannah rushed over as soon as she got Danielle’s message and quickly pulled him aside. “I heard … Jeremy didn’t leave you anything.”

Justin nodded, looking exhausted. “I never cared about those things.”

“Really? Even if you don’t care, you still deserve them. And he even wanted you to marry Adriana. Was he just using you? He wanted to lock you to Adriana with marriage!” Savannah said urgently, then studied his expression carefully. “Justin, are you really going to marry Adriana? If you do, you’ll be tied to the Barton Group forever. You’ll spend your whole life working for them.”

“I’m still thinking about it.” Justin’s gaze dropped, then he added, “If I leave Barton Group, I don’t have anyone backing me or a platform strong enough for my goals.”

Savannah looked anxious. “As long as you don’t marry Adriana, I can help you find someone to support you!”

She was panicking now. She couldn’t let him marry Adriana. If he did, his entire life would be tied to the Barton Group.

She needed to contact Mister right away and see if he’d be willing to pull Justin to his side.

Justin was clearly talented, and Mister had always valued him. But because of loyalty to Jeremy, Justin had refused to leave before. Now that Jeremy was gone, if Justin didn’t want to be tied down for life, following Mister was his only way out.

Savannah felt excited. If Justin joined Mister, she’d be his benefactor and the one who brought him in.

Justin glanced at her calmly. “This isn’t a game. I can’t just ignore Grandpa’s last wishes.”

With that, he turned to leave.

Savannah hurried after him. “Justin, are you really okay with this? Your grandpa was capable, but people still mocked him his whole life for being a live–in son–in–law. He never escaped the Bartons‘ shadow. Everyone said he rose because of the Bartons. Are you going to repeat his path? Give up even your surname and become a joke?”

Her words were inappropriate, especially at Jeremy’s funeral.

But they were undeniably true.

Jeremy wasn’t just a live–in son–in–law–he even took the Barton surname because of his birth family.

For years, it had made him a favorite topic of ridicule among businessmen during idle gossip.

Jeremy never cared. He believed only weak people obsessed over such things. He never felt ashamed.

But what about Justin? Did he feel the same way?

“Jeremy was selfish from the start,” Savannah said anxiously. “He kept you in the Bartons but gave you nothing. Making you marry Adriana was just another way to trap you.”

Justin stopped, his face darkening as he glanced at her. Then, he left without saying a word.

Savannah stomped in frustration. After checking the time, she left the funeral and called Mister directly.

In the past, she could only reach him through Ernest or Danielle. But after she turned on them, Mister began contacting her himself.

Savannah knew that with her abilities and means, it was only a matter of time before she earned his full approval.

And she had succeeded.

She had quietly dealt with Ernest’s illegitimate son and mistress. Danielle and Chandler had also been forced out of Harborton to Haldoria. By now, she was clearly an important piece on Mister’s board.

“Mister, Jeremy is gone,” Savannah whispered into the phone. “He left nothing to Danielle, Chandler, or Justin. Everything went to his granddaughter–Nicole, which means Adriana.”

“So Adriana really benefited from all the chaos,” Mister said in a low, rough voice.

Before he died, Jeremy had purposely misled Mister into thinking Nicole was someone else. That was why Mister had suspected everyone except Adriana.

“Mister, we can’t move against Adriana right now,” Savannah said through clenched teeth. Adriana had bodyguards everywhere. With her identity as the Barton heir, she was completely under the public spotlight.

The media had been exploding for days. Overnight, Adriana went from an orphan to the only heir of one of Harborton’s four great families–a real Cinderella rise.

“But there’s still a way to ruin her and destroy the Barton Group. We just need to pull Justin to our side.” Savannah pressed on. “Jeremy was smart. He knew Adriana lacked ability and experience. That’s why he left Justin nothing and forced him to marry her. Once that happened, Justin, Adriana, and the Barton Group would be completely tied together. Jeremy wanted Justin to spend his entire life working for Adriana and the Bartons.”
