Sweet Love Chapter 8

Mom, I don’t want to be stuck in the middle anymore by Mark Twain 8

Chapter 8

I don’t remember much of what happened next.

I just remember wet lips mashing against mine. Hands tearing at my dress.

When David finally came out and chased the man off, my lipstick was smeared all over my face. David

forced Chloe to look at me.

“Girls need to respect themselves. Don’t start thinking about boys at your age. Look what happens when you advertise yourself like that. Your sister put on a little makeup, and look at what she invited.”

“Chloe, be good.”

That was when I understood. David had been keeping Chloe in the shadows the whole time, making her

watch.

He’d used me to show her what men were really like, so she’d be scared enough to never wear makeup again.

Dad took me into a bathroom to wash my face and change my clothes.

“Lily, don’t tell Mom about tonight. She’ll be mad at me if she finds out, okay?”

I didn’t want them to fight, so I promised I wouldn’t say anything, even though I was terrified.

“You were a good girl, Lily. You’re young. You’ll forget it. But if your sister makes bad choices now, it’ll ruin

her life.”

He threatened Chloe too. If she told Mom, he’d make sure she was next.

She was violently ill. She couldn’t keep anything down, shaking and retching for days, but she wouldn’t tell

Mom why.

From that day on, Chloe never wore makeup or skirts again. She treated me better after that, too.

But she couldn’t stand being around Dad anymore.

When I came back to myself, Mom and Dad were already at each other’s throats.

Sarah was crying so hard she couldn’t catch her breath.

“You monster! She was just a kid! How could you do that to her!”

“I kept wondering why Chloe got so timid and scared to go out alone. This was all you!”

She clawed at David’s face. He grabbed her by the hair and wouldn’t let go.

“We’re the same, you and me! Didn’t you say ‘make an example of her’? Didn’t Chloe get better? Didn’t she listen?”

“Playing the grieving mother now? Now that she’s cold on a slab, suddenly you care? Where was all this love

when she was breathing?”

After years together, they knew exactly where to hit. Every word hit its mark.

It took several officers to pull them apart.

Mason wiped his eyes.

“Why? Why did Mom have to beat Lily and send her away? Wasn’t Lily Mom’s kid, too?”

Mason and Chloe were led out of the room. Sarah sank to the floor, completely wrung out. My parents were

detained.

They were being held on child-abuse charges. The police still needed to collect more evidence and wait for

the autopsy report.
