Sweet Love Chapter 7

Mom, I don’t want to be stuck in the middle anymore by Mark Twain 7

Chapter 7

The police were looking for Ruby. But they had to deal with something else first.

They brought Mason and Chloe into the room.

A female officer crouched down in front of him. “Honey, did you see your mom give your sister to someone?”

Mason’s mind was racing. He just wanted his sister back.

“Yes! Because I took a classmate out for a birthday dinner, Mom gave Lily to some stranger. She said it was

the only way I’d learn my lesson.”

“Officer, I messed up! I won’t do that again! Please find my sister! I even bought her chocolate!”

For an eleven-year-old, he was surprisingly articulate. Sarah tried to jump in several times, but the officers.

cut her off. They didn’t want to hear her excuses.

“Ruby is from my hometown. I didn’t mean to! I wasn’t giving my child away! I just wanted to teach the kids a lesson! I never thought it’d end like this! If Mason hadn’t spent that money, I wouldn’t have…”

Sarah was trying to blame Mason. David cut her off. He was shouting now.

“Enough! You did this! This is on you! Stop trying to pin it on everyone else! I asked you again and again if Ruby was trustworthy. You said she was family!”

“Lily deserved better than that!”

Sarah just kept shaking her head. “I didn’t know! If I’d known she was that kind of person, I never would’ve sent Lily with her!”

The officers kept questioning Mason.

“Mom was always hitting Lily, even when she hadn’t done anything wrong. She hit Lily when Chloe and I screwed up. She didn’t want to punish us, so she hit Lily Instead to keep us in line.”

“If I didn’t do my homework, Mom made Lily kneel and do it for me, even though she couldn’t even do the work. When Chloe wanted designer things, Mom made Lily scour the roadside for cans to pay for it.”

At first, I pushed back when Sarah treated me unfairly. I hadn’t done anything, so why was I the one being

punished?

Sarah blamed me for not keeping my brother and sister in line. But I was the only one who got punished.

Because I was the only one they shared… Using me as a punching bag meant neither of them felt like their “real” kid was being targeted. Over the years, I got used to it.

The officers looked at Sarah with disgust.

“Did your dad ever do anything to your sister?”

David’s face went pale. Chloe burst into tears.

“Dad’s a pervert!”

Through tears, she told them something even Mom didn’t know.

For a while, Chloe was obsessed with makeup, constantly stealing Sarah’s cosmetics, and she even started dating someone online.

Sarah worried, but every time she tried to stop Chloe, it only made things worse.

David said he could handle it. Sarah was skeptical, but two days later, Chloe stopped wearing makeup,

blocked the guy she met online, and did whatever she was told.

She asked David how he’d done it, but he just smiled and wouldn’t tell her. But I knew.

I remembered that night. David woke me up in the middle of the night, dressed me in a white miniskirt, and

put lipstick on me.

He took both our hands and led us somewhere out of the way.

I thought Dad was taking us somewhere fun. But when we got to an unfamiliar place, he let go of my hand, took Chloe, and left me there alone.

I looked everywhere for Dad.

A man reeking of cheap booze grabbed me.

He said things I didn’t understand at the time.

“Starting to sell yourself so young? Come here, let me get a taste. I’ve got money.”
