Sweet Love Chapter 4

Mom, I don’t want to be stuck in the middle anymore by Mark Twain 4

Chapter 4

Dad sighed and looked at Mom.

“Maybe we should…”

He wanted to suggest bringing me back home, but Mom finally had the other two under control. She wasn’t going to waste this chance. She wanted to break them.

“Mason, take this.”

Mom pulled a twenty from her bag and handed it to him. Mason looked confused, but he took it anyway.

“Now that your sister’s gone, we’ll be saving money. You can spend this twenty however you want. Treat your

friends to lunch. Or whatever it is you kids do.”

Mom. How could you even say that?

Mason didn’t like me, but he still slipped me a few dollars sometimes. He even bought me cupcakes.

I looked at Mason.

Guilt hit him hard. His legs went out from under him. He collapsed onto the floor.

He was only eleven. Against a mother like her, tears were his only defense.

“I want my sister! I want Lily! Give her back to me!”

He screamed himself hoarse. Mom shut him in his room.

Chloe looked like she wanted to say something, but when she saw Dad, she ducked back into her room.

“They’re attached to her. Maybe we should bring Lily home?”

Mom curled her lip.

“I just want them to remember this lesson. He’s already trying to bankroll his friends. We need to stop this

now before it gets worse.”

“Enough. Let them cry for a few more days, and then I’ll say we’re bringing Lily back.”

The next morning, my brother and sister stayed in their rooms and didn’t come out. Mom didn’t care.

She went to the grocery store like she always did.

When we went past a rundown apartment building, I perked up.

“Mom, I’m right here! Mom!”

Mom kept walking like nothing had happened.

A harsh, guttural barking erupted nearbyA German shepherd wouldn’t stop barking at one spot.

Mom glanced at it and recoiled, disgusted.

An older neighbor, Arthur Higgins hurried over to apologize.

“Rex, what’s wrong with you? You’ve been acting weird since last night. What are you barking at?”

The dog kept his eyes on me and let out a soft whine at me.

I reached out and gently patted his head.

I knew it was likely the smell of my blood that was making the dog uneasy.

I’m sorry, boy.

Mom bought her groceries and went home. She’d barely started cooking when someone knocked at the door.

“Police.”

“Mrs. Bennett? We found a body matching the description of a child. We need you to come with us.”
