Chapter 4
He stared at the report for a long time.
Then he let out a ridiculous laugh.
“Babe, are you seriously messing with me right now?”
“There’s no way I have all of these. Syphilis? HIV? Hepatitis? This is insane.”
I put on my worried face. “I thought it was a mistake too. But…”
He flinched. “But what?”
I sighed. “Your mom has the same results. HIV. Syphilis. Everything that spreads through saliva-she has it too.”
He froze, then started shaking his head like crazy.
“No. No way. We’re clean people. We eat at home. How could this happen?”
He stopped mid-sentence.
His face went white.
“It was… Ivy?”
I nodded.
“I had someone look into her. She used to work as a hostess at a club. Her private life was a mess. She probably infected you and your mom.”
Tristan looked stunned, but he still clung to hope.
“NO WAY. Ivy’s innocent. She wouldn’t do that kind of work.”
He tried to get up, insisting on going to the ICU to see his mother.
I stopped him. “She’s not in the ICU anymore.”
He relaxed a little, forcing out a relieved smile.
“See? I knew it. The hospital made a mistake. If Mom’s okay, then it’s not that serious-”

I cut him off.
“Tristan. I’m so sorry.”
The hope drained from his face.
I finished the sentence.
“Your mom’s in the morgue.”
He collapsed.
His pupils shrank. His lips trembled. No sound came out.
Then he started screaming.
“No! You’re lying! She was fine a few days ago! She can’t be dead!”
He thrashed, trying to roll out of bed.
I stepped forward, firmly holding his arm, voice gentle.
“If you don’t believe me, I’ll take you to see her.”
He went limp against me, eyes blank.
I helped him into a wheelchair. We didn’t say a word the whole way down.
Outside the morgue, cold air hit us like a wall.
He shivered uncontrollably.
The attendant pulled open the drawer and lifted the sheet.
His mother’s body was unrecognizable.
Skin mottled purple-blue, covered in oozing sores.
Seeing it, Tristan didn’t cry.
He was too scared.
Because he saw himself in that body.
His future.

Chapter 4
He shook violently and collapsed to the floor, too weak to stand.
I crouched down, patted his back.
“Don’t be scared. Your mom was older. Her immune system couldn’t handle it. That’s why she didn’t make it.”
“But you’re young. You’re strong. As long as you take your meds and follow treatment, you’ll recover.”
When he still couldn’t speak, I kept going.
“And you need to know-HIV isn’t a death sentence anymore. It’s a chronic condition. You can live a normal life.”
“As long as you control your viral load and keep your immune system up, you can live to seventy or eighty. Easy.”
His terrified eyes flickered with hope.
He grabbed my hand, voice hoarse and broken. “Really? You’re not lying? I can actually survive this?”
“Of course.”
I squeezed his freezing hand, looked him in the
eyes.
“We’re married. No matter what happens, I’ll stay with you.”
