Chapter 3
I took a long leave from the hospital.
Then booked a flight to Hawaii I’d always wanted to visit.
Twenty days after I left, Tristan called.
“Celeste, where the hell have you been? Even sulking has its limits!”
I stayed silent.
His tone softened. “Look, don’t take what Mom said seriously. She just really wants a grandkid. She didn’t mean it.”
He paused, choosing his words.
“Babe, Ivy and I agreed-once the baby’s born, I’ll give her a payout and send her abroad. She’ll never come back.”
“You’ll be the mom. We’ll be a family again. Just the three of us.”
I nodded along, pretending to be moved.
After hanging up, I opened the home monitor.
On screen, Tristan had his arm around Ivy, grinning.
“Don’t worry. I got Celeste under control.”
“Once you have the baby, I’m filing for divorce. She’s infertile. She’s got no leverage.”
Margaret beamed beside them, handing Ivy a bowl of soup.
“My son’s so smart. We’ll keep that nitvh calm for now so she doesn’t stress you out.”
“Ivy, sweetie, eat more. Hope you give me a healthy grandson.’
I watched the whole “happy family” scene.
And I laughed until my sides hurt.
Ivy’s body was a biological disaster zone. That baby? It wasn’t making it to term.
She’d be lucky if she survived delivery.

And those two idiots were living with her, eating with her, sharing everything.
They were probably marinating in her virus cocktail by now.
Sure enough, a few days later, Tristan called again.
This time, his voice was shaking.
“Babe, Mom’s sick. She’s got a high fever that won’t break. And she’s covered in a rash.”
“I feel like crap too. Can’t eat. Can’t sleep. My whole body hurts.”
I stifled a smile, keeping my tone soft.
“It’s probably just the flu or some virus. It’s been cold lately.”
“Take care of mom. I’ll fly back as soon as I’m done here. I’ll get you guys medicine from the hospital.”
“Okay. Please hurry…” His voice was so weak.
I hung up and booked the next stop on my trip.
Days dragged on.
Tristan kept calling non-stop.
I got tired of it and finally blocked him.
Until one day, his assistant called me, panicked.
“Mrs. Blackwell, Mr. Blackwell collapsed during a board meeting. He’s in the ER.”
“And his mother-she’s in the ICU. The doctors said multiple organ failure. She doesn’t have much time.”
I knew it was time.
I booked the next flight home and got to the hospital that night.
The attending doctor pulled me into his office, face grave, handing me a stack of reports.
“Ms. Monroe, as the patient’s spouse… I think it’s better if you’re the one to tell him.”
“Mr. Blackwell and his mother tested positive for over twenty different infectious pathogens. Including HIV and syphilis. I strongly suggest you get tested immediately.”

I nodded, expressionless, taking the reports.
“Understood. Thank you.”
I suited up-full PPE, mask, face shield, and walked into Tristan’s isolation room.
He lay in bed, gray and weak. IV in his arm. Monitors beeping.
When he saw me dressed like a hazmat worker, his eyes went wide.
Then terrified.
“Babe, what’s wrong with me? Is it serious? The doctors won’t tell me anything.”
“Did you see my mom? How is she?”
I said nothing.
Just sat down next to him and handed him the report.
