She got the divorce and bolted 6
Chapter 6
Melody sat on the soft leather couch in the reception room, rubbing her temple where the crumpled paper ball had just hit her.
Rowan brought over a cup of hot tea. “Ms. Foster, Mr. Hale was called into a last-minute transnational conference. You may need to wait for a while.”
“Then can I wait in his office?” Melody took a sip of tea. “It’s a bit stuffy in here.”
Rowan’s back stiffened. “Sorry, Ms. Foster. Mr. Hale doesn’t like others entering his office.”
“Not even me?” Melody raised her watery eyes and looked directly at him.
Rowan’s scalp prickled. “Please don’t make things difficult for me.”
Melody lowered her gaze, concealing the coldness in her eyes. When she looked up again, she smiled gently. “Alright. I’ll wait here, then. You can get back to work.”
After leaving Hale Group, Sienna headed straight to the nearby central business district to interview for jobs. She had graduated from Arvine University with a major in Environmental Design and specialized in interior design.
Her bank balance wasn’t at rock bottom yet. She planned to build up some experience in the workforce first, then start her own business.
Sienna was very confident in her abilities. She had competed in interior design contests during university, and her final project had even won an award.
She assumed interviewers would regard her highly, and that several companies would fight over her. She had even decided on the way there that if she got multiple offers, she’d need to carefully consider which one to choose.
It was like someone who hadn’t won the lottery yet, but had already planned exactly how to spend the money.
However, reality hit her hard. Being a corporate rat wasn’t that easy, and for just a few thousand dollars a month, at that.
At the first company, the design director flipped through her portfolio, adjusted his glasses, and gave her an earnest
assessment.
“Ms. Winger, your ‘Stillwater Residence’ residential project is indeed impressive. However, demand for high-end custom homes like this is quite limited in the current market. Our company doesn’t have the capacity for projects at that level.
“The rest of your work is very creative. But like pieces in an art gallery, they’re beautiful, but not practical. The plumbing layouts and circulation design are overly idealistic.”
Sienna was stunned. Unpractical?
At the second company, the interviewer pointed out the gap in her resume and asked sharply, “Why did you delay graduation by a year? Can you explain?”
Sienna’s throat tightened. She couldn’t exactly say she’d had an unplanned pregnancy and miscarriage, causing her to miss graduation, so she made something up. “Due to family matters, I couldn’t finish my final project in time.”
The interviewer looked unconvinced and pressed further. “Then why was there another gap year after graduation? You couldn’t find a job?”
Sienna pursed her lips. She couldn’t say she had gone home to be a full-time wife, so she lied again. “A family member became paralyzed and couldn’t care for himself. I had to take care of him.”
The interviewer’s gaze drifted to the checked “Married” box on her application, his look turning meaningful. “Do you have plans for children anytime soon? Our projects involve a lot of overtime.”
Sienna was speechless.

At the third company, the boss glanced at her resume, then looked her up and down. “Ms. Winger, you’re an Aries?”
“Yes,” Sienna replied, confused.
He smiled apologetically. “Ah, what a pity. I’m a Capricorn. Our signs aren’t very compatible. And you have such a refined presence, Ms. Winger. We’re just a small company. I’m afraid you wouldn’t last here.”
Sienna was dumbfounded. Star sign incompatibility? Too refined?
After visiting several companies in one afternoon, Sienna gained a deep understanding of how brutal the job market was. A heavy sense of defeat washed over her.
At Nightsky Bar, Michelle Gill sprayed a mouthful of soda as Sienna recounted her tales.
“Pfft! Star sign incompatibility? What kind of ridiculous excuse is that?”
Sienna poured out all the frustrations from her interviews that day to her best friend. “There was an even worse one. He asked me what I’d do if five leaders came in and there were only four cups of water.”
“What did you say?”
“I’d drink them all myself!” Sienna tipped her head back and downed another drink.
Michelle laughed so hard she nearly fell over. “Why don’t you come work with me and become a model? With your height and looks, you’d totally make it.”
“Forget it.” Sienna waved her off. She had her pride. “I’d probably twist myself into a pretzel on the runway and embarrass myself.”
Michelle was puzzled. “Isn’t it easy for you to find a job? The Winger family or the Hale family could easily arrange something for you.”
“It’s never good to rely on others.” Sienna was a little drunk now. She tightened her grip on the glass and said, “The Winger family hasn’t had a place for me in a long time. I don’t want to beg them anymore.
“If Clayton and I get divorced, he won’t be kind enough to take in his ex-wife. Today, I asked for 50 million dollars in compensation, and he refused to give it to me. Then he blew up and kicked me out!”
The more she spoke, the angrier she got. She slammed her glass down on the table.
Michelle comforted her. “Don’t freak out. What if you don’t get divorced?”
Sienna lowered her head, staring at her reflection in the glass. Her voice was light like a feather. “Melody is back. If I don’t divorce him, should I just sit around and wait to be cheated on? She even went to his company today. It won’t be long before old flames reignite.”
“What?” Michelle’s eyes widened. “That stinky worm is back? She really won’t go away! Does Mr. Hale Senior know?”
“It’s been so long. Clayton’s wings are fully grown now. Who can stop him?” Sienna finally couldn’t hold on anymore and collapsed onto the table.
Michelle had driven there and hadn’t touched a drop of alcohol. She’d spent the whole time listening to Sienna ramble. Seeing her drunk, she sighed and pulled her up. “I told you not to drink so much. You’re a lightweight. Why did you think you could drink this much?”
Sienna clung to Michelle in a daze, muttering, “Who can’t live without whom? He’s just a scumbag.”
She waved her hand and said with full confidence, “Whoever wants him can have him. I’m out.”
Michelle half-dragged her toward the exit, humoring her. “Yes, yes. Leave that piece of shit. I’ll find you someone better. There are plenty of hot guys in the modeling industry.”
Sienna’s eyes lit up instantly. She staggered back a couple of steps. “That’s great! I want the puppy type, obedient and energetic.”

Michelle laughed helplessly. Just as she was about to help her into the car, she caught sight of two figures out of the corner of her eye. She froze and blurted out, “Isn’t that Clayton?”
At the mention of his name, Sienna’s eyes darted around. “That bastard? Where? Where?”
She finally locked onto the target a few feet away, next to a Maybach. Despite being drunk, her eyesight was surprisingly sharp.
Clayton politely opened the passenger door for Melody. The two chatted and laughed, standing close, looking like an attractive pair.
In their three years of marriage, Clayton had never been this gentlemanly with Sienna. He had never once opened the passenger door for her. Every time they got out of the car, he’d walk off faster than she did, leaving behind his cold, indifferent back.
The thought made Sienna’s heart ache. Without a word, she slipped off the high heel from her left foot and hurled it at them.
A bang rang out.
It was a completely unexpected hit.
