Chapter 28
Clayton sat on the black leather couch with his legs crossed. He did not pick up the document. Instead, he turned his eyes to Melody. “You want to enter the entertainment industry?”
Melody pursed her lips. Her voice was gentle yet determined. “Performing in theaters is a dream of mine. However, people don’t live on dreams. I can’t rely on you guys forever either, right?
“I hope to make money with my own hands so that I can bring my parents over to Brightford and take care of them during the final years of their lives.”
Clayton picked up the document and flipped through the pages. He listed a few points fairly quickly.
“It’s perfectly understandable for anyone to want to make more money. However, you’re a junior actress. Playing the female lead in a highly anticipated show, which is also your debut work, will bring you a lot of unwanted attention. You’ll also gain a bad reputation in the entertainment industry.
“Moreover, it won’t be easy to persuade Carl, the director. He’s chosen the actress for the female lead’s role personally. He was already quite displeased when he was forced to make a certain popular celebrity the male lead a while ago. He would probably announce that he’ll drop this work if the actress for the female lead’s role gets replaced.
“Besides, they had settled on the characters’ costumes and taken photos for the show’s production. Regina Kirk will be starring as the female lead. She’s widely recognized for her exceptional acting skills.
“During the last two years, three movies in which she starred in were all great hits. She has more than 50 million followers on her Twitter account. If you manage to replace her for the female lead’s role, her fans will definitely come after you for the next ten years.”
Melody’s face turned pale. “What do we do, then?”
“Take the second female lead’s role.”
Clayton tossed the document back onto the table and said flatly, “The actress having that role now isn’t that good at acting. She’s replaced another actress for this role with the help of her backing.
“Her situation and yours are a little similar. Both of you don’t have that many fans at the moment. The director wouldn’t be as mad if you replaced the current candidate for this role.”
Melody nodded in agreement. “I’ll heed your advice. I’m already very glad to have the opportunity to appear in the show. It’s always an uphill climb at first. I don’t really mind whether I’m the female lead or not. I’ll do my best even if I’m asked to play
the role of a maid.”
“Great! I’ll speak to the Jillians Media team, then. It should be pretty easy for us to ask them to replace a cast member since the Hale Group is their biggest investor.”
As he was saying that, Miles took out his phone, which had been vibrating nonstop, from his pocket. The phone screen was filled with notification messages.
“Is that person trying to reach you for an urgent matter?” Melody had noticed that his phone had been vibrating for quite a while.
Clayton teased him. “Did you recklessly break some woman’s heart again? Is she trying to hunt you down now?”
“Am I that kind of person?” Miles retorted. The phone screen lit up again as more messages came in. They were all from
Sienna.
Clayton spotted Sienna’s name appearing briefly on the screen. He snatched Miles’ phone away. “Why is she contacting you?”
Miles scratched his nose awkwardly. He said with resignation, “She’s the one trying to hunt me down now.”

Melody widened her eyes. “She’s heartbroken because of you?”
“I’d be nuts if that were true.” Miles tried to take his phone back. “There’s no way I’d talk to that crazy wench. Give me my phone!”
Clayton kept the phone out of Miles’ reach. “Password.”
“You should respect my privacy as well, okay?”
The two of them stared at each other for three seconds. Miles gave in first. “It’s 0816.”
After the phone was unlocked, numerous messages asking Miles to pay his debt could be seen in the chat window.
“Hi? Hello? Where’s my money?
“Paying me a million dollars shouldn’t be a problem for you, right, Mr. Turner?
“Link to essay ‘Why you should pay off your debts as soon as possible.’
“If a person doesn’t even bother to keep their promise, how are they different from the stray dogs roaming the streets?
“If you don’t transfer the money to me, I’m going to upload and spread the video of you dressed as a woman on the internet!
For the past week, Sienna had sent countless messages to Miles asking for the money whenever she was free.
Clayton frowned slightly. Sienna had blocked his number and ignored his messages asking for the taxi fare. Yet, she had time to send Miles so many messages every day.
