Chapter 40

Asher tried to shake Jesse off, but Jesse used every ounce of strength he had and refused to let

“Mr. Green, calm down! He’s not worth it! If Mrs. Greene finds out, she’ll be worried!”

Asher’s breathing gradually steadied.

He shook Jesse off and walked over to Caleb, who was slumped on the ground like a boneless heap.

Shadow fell across Asher’s face. His eyes gleamed.

“If you ever touch a single hair on my wife’s head again,” he began, straightening his rumpled collar. “I’ll make sure you disappear from Navalton.”

He turned and walked away without sparing the man on the ground another glance.

Jesse followed. He barely dared to breathe.

”

Once they were in the car, Jesse looked at Asher’s ice-cold profile in the rearview mirror.

After hesitating, he finally spoke. “Mr. Greene, should we tell Mrs. Greene about this?”

He thought it might be the perfect chance to win her back.

“What for?”

Jesse was stunned.

“So she knows you fought for-”

“She’s my wife,” Asher cut him off with a heavy tone. “She’s mine. Protecting her is my duty. That’s all there is to it.”

Jesse bit back a sigh. The problem was, Juliet didn’t want to be his wife anymore.

Across town, Juliet opened her door.

Zachary stood at the door. He had a thermal container. “I figured you didn’t eat properly tonight, so I made some soup.”

Juliet stepped aside to let him in.

“You shouldn’t have gone through all this trouble.”

“It’s nothing,” he replied, setting the container on the dining table. “You’re alone. I can’t help but worry about you.”

Juliet paused mid-motion while reaching for a bowl. She didn’t answer him.

She twisted the lid off the thermos. A gentle, refreshing aroma filled the room.

“The kitchen sink is clogged,” she said. “Don’t use it for now. I’ll have someone take a look at

it tomorrow.”

“I’ll check it for you,” he replied, already rolling up his sleeves.

“No, it’s fine-

Zachary was already in the kitchen.

Juliet followed him in and watched as he opened the cabinet beneath the sink to inspect the

pipes.

Her gaze fell on his expensive-looking suit. “Really, you don’t have to. I-”

“Something’s stuck here…”

Zachary reached into the cabinet and twisted the pipe joint.

Suddenly, a stream of murky water burst out of the pipe.

Juliet yelped and took a step back.

Zachary reacted instantly. He turned sideways to shield her. The water sprayed all over him.

He braced against the water and quickly tightened the valve. His clothes were soaked through.

Juliet fumbled for tissues to help wipe him down, but she didn’t know where to start.

“It’s fine.”

Zachary took the tissues and casually wiped his face. “Do you have any tools? I’ll fix the pipes.”

Juliet fetched a toolbox from the storage room.

Zachary took off his drenched suit jacket. With only his wet dress shirt on, he crouched down

to work.

The translucent white fabric clung to his back and shoulders, outlining his muscles.

Water dripped from the ends of his hair and slid down the side of his neck before disappearing

beneath his collar.
