Save Your Pleas: I’m With Your Best Friend Now Novel Chapter 38

Chapter 38

Evangeline had clawed her way into Asher’s life using her father’s life-saving favor and Asher’s guilt.

She couldn’t afford to fail now.

Not when she still had an unexpected pregnancy to deal with.

She picked up her phone again and sent a message to Amanda. “Aunt Amanda, I’ll come visit you tomorrow.”

Meanwhile, Asher had returned to his estate.

Agnes had already finished cleaning and gone home.

He didn’t turn the lights on. Standing in the entryway, his gaze fell on the shoe cabinet.

Juliet’s pink, fluffy slippers used to be there. It was neatly paired with his black leather ones.

Every time he came home, she would run over in those cute slippers, stand on her tiptoes, and help him loosen his tie.

“Was today exhausting?”

That sweet greeting always washed the fatigue away.

Asher shrugged off his jacket and tossed it onto the couch. His gaze drifted to the coffee table. There used to be a potted ivy there.

Juliet watered it every morning. She would trim the dead leaves, too.

One evening, he had returned home early and seen her crouched in front of the table, talking to the plant.

“You need to grow up quickly, okay? Once you’re big enough, I’ll send you to Dad’s office to keep him company.”

Asher felt something inside him fill up as he watched her earnest profile.

He walked over and hugged her from behind. “So, this plant is our child now?”

Juliet jumped and swatted him playfully. “When did you get back?”

“Just now.”

He rested his chin on her shoulder. “I’m in a bad mood. I need you to comfort me, too.”

“Liar. You’re clearly smiling.”

“I’m not. Kiss me and I will.”

“There’s someone here,” she said, blushing as she pushed him away.

“If you save the kisses for tonight, I’ll have to charge double.”

“S-Stop it. My waist is still sore.”

Asher tightened his arms around her. His voice was low and raspy. “Let me hold you just a little longer.”

Whenever he held her like that, he felt as though he had the world in his hands.

“Jules-”

Asher snapped back to reality.

The coffee table in front of him was empty. The potted ivy was gone.

“Isn’t this going too far, Juliet?” he muttered. “You just had to take my plant-son away,

He thought maybe he’d use taking the plant back as an excuse to see her again tomorrow.

His stomach growled.

Asher walked into the kitchen. For a moment, it felt as though Juliet was still there.

She stood at the stove in an apron. Stew was simmering over low heat. She turned at the sound, eyes lighting up. “You’re back? I saved you some late-night snacks.”

“It’s late. Why aren’t you asleep yet?”

“I was waiting for you.”

too?”

Juliet would smile as she ladled out a bowl of stew and handed it to him. “You must be starving after working so late.”

Asher took the bowl and took a sip.

The warm stew slid down his throat, chasing away a whole day’s worth of fatigue.

He set the bowl down, cupped Juliet’s face, and leaned in to kiss her.

“Jules.”

“Yeah?”

“Marrying you was the best decision I’ve ever made in my life.”

Juliet rose on tiptoe to kiss him back. “Mine too.”

Asher stood in the kitchen. It was now stripped of all warmth. An indescribable ache spread inside him like rampant vines.

His appetite vanished.

Going upstairs, he felt as if he could see her perched on the stairs waiting for him.

“Honey, are you tired? Do you want a shower?”

“I’m tired. I want a hug from my wife.”

Asher reached for her.

His fingers met only air.

The smile on his face faltered. A trace of desolation flickered in his eyes.

He slowly withdrew his hand. His back bent under the weight. “Jules… Did I really do something wrong?”
