Chapter 29
1/2
This was a question Juliet had had in her heart for many years. She didn’t understand why her mother could stand a man like her father.
Jolene’s gaze wandered out the window. She sighed long and hard, a sound filled with exasperation as well as acceptance. There wasn’t a single hint of regret, however.
“Well… I fell in love with your father’s looks back when I was young,” Jolene said. A shy, girlish smile appeared on her lips as she reminisced about the past. “Those eyes of his —one look was enough to disarm you for good. I’d get so angry whenever he got reckless. Yet the moment I looked at James, I’d soften up and not be able to stay angry at him anymore.”
James’ face surfaced in Juliet’s mind. It was true that James was a very handsome man.
James had a handsome facial structure, mesmerizingly tender eyes, and beautifully shaped lips. He was famous throughout the region for his looks back in his youth.
Even though James was in his 50s now and worn down by both age and addiction, his charming looks were still here to stay. The rogueish charm of his as he snapped at people with a cigarette between his lips still captivated many women.
James had that rugged, mature bad-boy charisma that one could find in many older actors on
screen.
Not even the blurriest of old photos could obscure the charm of his eyes.
Juliet suddenly recalled the flyer Ariane had shown her a couple of days ago.
If even plain -looking and fairly unattractive men could make women fall utterly head over heels for them, then it was only a given that the same applied to her father, who’d never lost much of his good looks even with age.
But Jolene was a pretty good-looking woman too. She had curves in all the right places. Her good looks were only second to James’.
“I know James is a scoundrel,” Jolene said, her voice pulling Juliet back to the present. “But I’m a hopeless romantic, after all. I fell head over heels for James, which I’ve accepted wholeheartedly. That’s just how my life is going to be for me.
Jolene had so unabashedly admitted her “delusions” without masking even a shred of them.
“This is the path I chose to take. I’ve never regretted it, nor will I ever do so,” Jolene added.
Jolene’s cheeks turned pink suddenly as her eyes lit up. “All the hardship I suffer feels worth it

as long as I get to make love with your father from time to time.”

Juliet’s cheeks grew warm. She was stunned speechless by her mother’s incredibly blunt words.
Juliet used to think that Jolene chose not to retaliate against James out of fear and weakness. She never imagined that Jolene only did so because she found joy in it.
It really did seem like everyone had their own way of life.
Jolene chuckled loudly, as if she’d finally released a great weight from her chest.
“I used to think you were just like me, Jules-that you married Asher for his looks too. Asher is far more handsome than your father, and richer too. He’s way more powerful than your father ever could be. I thought you’d never be able to give up on Asher for the rest of your life. Turns out you’re much wiser than I am.
“I’ve spent so many years earning money to sustain your father, only to neglect you in the process. I was selfish, devoting so much of my love and care to your father instead of you.”
Juliet didn’t blame Jolene. Juliet wasn’t old school when it came to this regard-she didn’t believe that parents necessarily had to sacrifice everything for their children.
It was just that Juliet had experienced a lot of suffering when she was a child without her
mother around.
But what could Jolene have done? She couldn’t have raised Juliet after taking on a
housekeeping job in Navalton. There were simply too many things beyond Jolene’s reach at that point.
“It’s normal for those from an ordinary family to struggle between work and care in order to earn a living,” Juliet said. She was about to become a mother too, so she could understand a little of Jolene’s helplessness.”
“Humans are complicated creatures. If everyone could balance earning a living and having a good life, the world wouldn’t be divided into the rich and the poor.”
Jolene reached out and caressed Juliet’s hair. There was a curious gleam in the former’s eyes.
