Chapter 22
Half an hour later, Matthew was carried out, drenched in his own vomit.
Asher stubbed out his cigar irritably. Jesse had said Juliet was picking up freelance translation jobs. That bit of money was barely enough to cover a month’s property management fees.
He knew just how stubborn she was. But without him, how long could she hold out?
Asher lifted his fifth cigar of the night to his lips and tapped on his phone.
“You have transferred $1,000,000 to Juliet Stone, account ending 0817.”
He glanced at the bank card number. She had deliberately chosen one that matched his birthday.
He opened a chat with Jesse. “Remind Mrs. Greene tomorrow to…”
His fingers paused as he muttered under his breath, “How do I remind her to spend money without making it obvious?”
He deleted the half-typed message and sent another. “Figure out a way to get Mrs. Greene to spend money. If she doesn’t, you’re fired.”
After a moment, Asher decided that wasn’t a very motivating message to send his employee. So, he added, “Whatever she spends, I’ll give you the same amount!”
On the other end, Jesse, who’d received the message in the middle of the night, started swearing the moment he read the second message. “What a lunatic! His wife wants to leave him, and he’s making it my problem!
“I warned him so many times that Mrs. Greene would be upset about Evangeline, but he kept saying I didn’t understand women, and that his wife was sensible. Now that he’s slipped up, he’s turning the tables on me?”
It had taken Jesse years to work his way up to become an executive assistant at Greene Corporation. Jobs weren’t exactly easy to come by these days!
Fuming, Jesse abandoned his plan to flirt with women online. With his job on the line, it was probably best to stay single.
Just then, a third message came in. He glanced at it and literally jumped. “Oh my God! Mrs. Greene, please don’t forgive that bastard too quickly. Let me make a fortune first!”
Meanwhile, Juliet felt like she was dying. An entire night had passed, and the progress bar on

Furthermore, it felt like there was a monster living in her stomach, constantly rolling around. Forget eating. Even a sip of water was enough to trigger violent dry heaving.
She hadn’t had a proper meal in two days. Everything she ate came right back up. And in her lower abdomen, the presence of that tiny life was painfully clear. So clear that it filled her with
fear.
She needed money. Her mortgage, living expenses, and the future cost of raising this child- none of it could happen without money.
Gritting her teeth, Juliet forced herself to stand. But her vision went black instantly, and her body gave out. She collapsed to the ground, her forehead slamming into the hard tile floor with a loud thud.
The sharp pain jolted her back into consciousness for a second. She twitched her fingers, but
couldn’t even lift her arm. She had overestimated herself.
There was no way she could finish this job while keeping the baby healthy. If she pushed on, not only would she not make any money, but she’d destroy both herself and the child first.
She didn’t know how long she lay there before finally dragging herself upright with the support of the wall. She picked up her phone, fingers trembling, and found Zachary’s number.
She was full of struggle and guilt. Zach had introduced her to a friend. If she bailed now, he’d definitely get scolded too.
The call connected quickly. There was faint singing on the other end. “Jules?”
Juliet opened her mouth, her eyes reddening. “Zach… I’m sorry. I can’t continue the translation. I’ll find a way to pay the penalty for the breach of contract.”
There was silence for a few seconds. Just when she thought he’d be disappointed or angry, he spoke in a tone gentler than it had ever been. “What happened? You don’t sound okay.”
“I… I’m sick. I probably need to rest for a while.”
“Silly head.” Zachary sighed softly. “If you’re sick, then you should rest. Work can wait. Your health comes first. Don’t worry about the penalty. I’ll take care of it.”
