Princess Without Pack by Mark Twain 8
Chapter 8
Chapter 8
I had no idea what Jade meant about making Ashton’s life hell.
Mom and Dad went into full defense mode at home, turning away anyone from the Reed family and making sure I
got through the holiday in peace.
After New Year’s at dinner, I carefully brought up wanting to move to New York for work.
Mom grabbed her phone ready to book me another therapy appointment.
Dad swallowed his food in a hurry and cut in.
“Sweetheart you’re not thinking about getting back with that punk, are you? Absolutely not!”
Their reaction startled me.
I waved my hands frantically.
“No! I was planning to move there anyway. This has nothing to do with Ashton.”
I explained my original plans. The career I actually wanted.
After hearing me out they were both supportive and told me to go for it.
I started preparing immediately.
While searching for jobs online, a trending post popped up on my feed.
“OMG Found a Homewrecker’s Public Diary”
I had a bad feeling. I clicked in-and sure enough, it was about Jadę.
The comment section already had thousands of replies, and it was still climbing.
“How did she have the audacity to post this stuff publicly”
“Love how the internet exposes everyone. Even mistresses can’t hide.”
“Just watched it. Gross. She literally asked him ‘who do you love more, me or your girlfriend’ lol”
The internet was ruthless, brutal.

Within hours Jade’s account was trending.
She started frantically deleting posts.
But hundreds of posts. All that detailed documentation of their affair.
Deleting it all was nearly impossible.
Especially since people had already screen recorded everything and reposted it.
Soon internet sleuths dug up Jade’s real identity. And Ashton’s.
For days straight their names were everywhere online.
People started boycotting Ashton’s company. Several deals he’d secured fell through.
Under pressure the company released a statement firing Jade.
Furious, Jade retaliated by posting the group chat screenshots online-dragging Ashton down with her.
The group chat contents caused an even bigger uproar.
Some friends and relatives recognized me and reached out to check on me.
By the time I packed my bags and left for New York, the whole thing had blown over.
Jade got fired. The company sued her for damaging their reputation.
Ashton’s partners banded together, forced him to sell his shares, and kicked him out completely.
I was waiting for a cab outside my building, when Ashton showed up again.”
He stared at me, hesitating.
“Stella. I decided to come back home. Gonna stay local from now on. Not leaving again.”
I nodded casually, my excitement for the future impossible to hide.
“Mm. Well I’m moving to New York.”
Ashton laughed bitterly.
“Stella. I just want to make it up to you. Why are you always running away.”
The cab pulled up. I was busy loading my luggage and ignored him.

Before getting in, I noticed he was still standing there, frozen.
I thought for a moment, then dug out the train tickets I’d forgotten to throw away.
“If you want to make it up to me.”
“Reimburse me for these two tickets. Just transfer it to my account.”
