Princess Without Pack by Mark Twain 6
Chapter 6
Chapter 6
The next morning, Mom and Dad dragged me to see a therapist.
The same one I saw as a kid.
After it happened I got diagnosed with depression and spent a year in treatment.
When the doctor said I was fine, my mom cried tears of joy.
That year I was sick was her nightmare too.
After the appointment, Mom took me to the grocery store, buying everything she could, insisting I eat well and
recover.
Carrying bags and walking home, I saw Ashton outside our building.
Our complex had private elevator access. You needed a key card.
Dad was home-probably didn’t let him up.
Mom had been cheerful, but the moment she saw him, her smile vanished.
Ashton wore the same clothes as yesterday. His eyes were bruised, a faint slap mark on his face, looking utterly
defeated:
His voice came out rough.
“Stella. Can we talk.”
“Go talk to your side piece.”
Mom rolled her eyes hard, pulling me toward the entrance.
I stopped.
“It’s fine Mom. Let me handle this so he stops bothering me.”,
Ashton went pale.
Mom kept glancing back as she led me away.
I stayed calm, eyes fixed on him. “What do you want.”

Suddenly the guy who was so desperate to talk couldn’t find words.
His mouth opened and closed. Finally managed to say.
“I broke up with Jade.”
I crossed my arms, unimpressed. “So?”
Ashton stared at me intense.
“Last year, my company hit a major crisis. I worked nonstop for a month, barely eating.”
“Jade noticed. She made me meals every day.”
“I was grateful. Gave her gifts. And then we got closer and-”
I frowned, cutting him off, impatient.
“What’s your point. Give me your love history? Don’t gross me out.”
Ashton’s breath caught. He looked crushed.
After a moment of silence he tried again.
“I’m trying to say I confused gratitude and companionship with love. Last night I realized… the one I really love is still you.”
“Stella. Can we get back together.”
I shook my head, cold.
“No.”
Ashton got desperate, gripping my shoulders.
“Why not?”
“Stella we’ve been together ten years. How many decades do people get? You’re really gonna throw it all away just like that?”
“I only got confused because you weren’t there. I was vulnerable.”
“I heard from my mom-you’ll be moving to New York after New Year. Then we can be together, live properly. Isn’t that what you want?”

Chapter 6
His hands started shaking on my shoulders.
“If you’re worried we can just get married right now-”
“Yeah! Let’s get married!”
Like he’d had some brilliant idea. He grabbed my hand and started pulling me.
I yanked my hand free, massaging the sore wrist.
“Ashton are you insane. Why would you think I’d forgive someone who betrayed me.”
His eyes went red.
“Why not! I just made one little mistake.”
“You don’t understand the pain of struggling alone in a new city. If someone cares for you then, gives you warmth, you’d-”
“I’d WHAT!”
I stared him down, looking at a face so familiar yet completely alien.
“You think I’d cheat too? Ashton not everyone’s as shitty as you!”
All the hurt I’d been swallowing came flooding out.
“You think only you have it hard? The world doesn’t owe you anything!”
“I stayed home alone while you couldn’t help with family stuff. When your parents were sick, I took time off to care for them. And you think I wouldn’t envy other girls?”
“Ashton, your excuses for cheating are disgusting.”
I looked at him one last time, then turned around.
“We’re done. Don’t come looking for me again. I don’t want to see you anymore.”
Without waiting for his reaction, I walked straight upstairs.
