But the expression, warped by genuine terror and raw nerves, was a grotesque, almost comical mask.

I wondered how I’d ever been blind enough to want him.

“Jasmine, believe me, I love you! Only you!” His voice sharpened. “It was Teresa! That bitch! She seduced me! Poisoned me against you! Said she could give me everything you could, and more! I was weak! Confused! She bewitched me!”

“Bewitched?” I repeated softly. “Confused?” Another empty echo.

He seized on the words, nodding frantically. Tears finally tracked down his tense face. “Yes! Just confused! One more chance! I’ll sign over every share! I’ll destroy that woman if you want! We can start over, please? Just like before, no-better than before!”

His eyes burned with desperate hope, a drowning man clutching at driftwood.

I watched the meticulously staged performance. It was full of cracks he thought I couldn’t see.

“Kevin, what you’ve become wasn’t my doing. Or Teresa’s. It was the greed, the shortsightedness, the rot that was always in your bones.”

“Bewitched”?” The corner of my mouth lifted in a cruel curve. “No. You’re simply reaping what you sowed.”

Every manufactured expression on his face solidified into a rigid mask.

The forced tears clung to his skin, pathetic and meaningless.

“No… Jasmine… You can’t-”

“Mr. Loggins,” I cut him off without looking up, “see him out.”

“Yes, Ms. Watson.” Charles stepped forward, his expression impassive. The gesture he made toward the door was perfectly courteous yet utterly unyielding.

Two security guards in black materialized in the doorway.

Pure panic seized Kevin. He tried to lunge forward, but Charles intercepted him with fluid precision.

“Jasmine! I was wrong! Please! For the sake of what we-”

The closing door swallowed his pleas, muffling then severing the sound completely.

Silence returned, cool and absolute.

I looked down at the divestiture proposal. My eyes lingered on “Stephenson Group” for one heartbeat. Then I signed-Jasmine Watson-without hesitation.

After being removed from Horizon Capital’s offices, Kevin didn’t give up.

Primal fear and the terror of losing everything gnawed at his remaining reason like venomous snakes.

He paced the lobby like a caged animal, tracing the same hopeless path.

Finally, a desperate and stupid plan formed-he would drag Teresa back with him. He would pile all the blame on her.
