Outside the VIP hospital room, the Hayes family elders who’d rushed over cornered Zachary. He reeked of alcohol and his clothes were a mess.
Judith Hayes, Zachary’s grandmother, pointed through the doorway at Elowen, who was hooked up to monitors and tubes. “Zachary, what the hell did you do? Your mother was perfectly fine this morning. Why is she in the hospital with a heart attack?”
“Grandma, I don’t know…” Zachary’s mind was spinning. He couldn’t wrap his head around how he’d just been drinking at home to forget his problems, and then he woke up to find his entire world had fallen apart.
The butler quickly stepped in to explain.
After Zachary got drunk, he slept with Kristen, and then the Reeves family showed up demanding they get married. The two families got into a massive fight, and in all the chaos, Elowen collapsed.
Judith slapped Zachary hard across the face. “Zachary, I’m so dissapointed! I thought after everything that happened three years ago, you’d finally grow up, but here we are again.”
She turned and glared at Kristen with pure disgust. “Why do you keep getting mixed up with this woman? She’s a disaster! Three years ago, this woman put you in a wheelchair. If it wasn’t for Autumn, you wouldn’t even be walking today. Now she’s got your mother in the ICU fighting for her life. Are you happy now?”
When Vanessa heard someone calling her precious daughter names, she snapped back. “Madam Hayes, your grandson forced himself on my daughter. That’s sexual assault. The only reason we haven’t called the police and had him arrested is because these two already had their wedding and they care about each other.
“We just wanted them to make it legal with a marriage license and give our daughter some protection. How were we supposed to know your family would react like this?”
“Mom, what are you talking about?” Kristen shot Vanessa a glare before throwing herself into Zachary’s arms, tears welling up in her eyes.
“Zachary, don’t listen to my mom. What happened today was just an accident. I only told my parents I was worried because you were so drunk. How was I supposed to know you’d force me to sleep with you? Or that they’d show up right when it happened?”
Zachary instinctively wrapped his arms around her. He couldn’t blame Kristen for what happened when he was wasted. Even though everything was fuzzy, he vaguely remembered

He’d mistaken her for Autumn, and Kristen had just not pushed him away. How was that her fault? When it came down to it, he was the one who screwed up.
“Grandma, Kristen didn’t do anything wrong. This is on me. I promise I’ll make things right with everyone.”
Judith let out a harsh laugh. “Oh really? I’d love to see how you plan to fix this mess.”
Outside city hall, Zachary stood holding their brand-new marriage license without even a hint of a smile on his face.
Kristen, on the other hand, was practically glowing. She’d finally gotten exactly what she wanted, and all her anxiety from the past few days just melted away. From now on, no one could compete with her for Zachary.
“Zachary, are you free today? My parents know we got married and they want to celebrate with
us.”
Zachary frowned and tugged at his tie. “Can’t. I’ve got work stuff to handle. You go ahead.”
His assistant had just called about some important document that needed his immediate attention.
Kristen’s smile froze for a second, but she recovered quickly. “Oh, that’s okay. I’ll just tell them we’ll celebrate another day. I’ll come with you to the office instead.”
Zachary didn’t really care either way. He just muttered “sure” and told the driver to head straight to the company.
The second they walked through the office doors, Kristen couldn’t wait to announce her new status as Zachary’s wife to everyone in sight.
She told her bodyguards to hand out the gifts she’d prepared ahead of time to everyone at the
company.
Zachary ignored her completely and took the file from his assistant. As he read through it line by line, his expression turned into pure rage.
