Zachary’s fingers tightened around the phone, and his voice came out almost pleading. “Mom, I can’t leave. I don’t want to lose Autumn…”

Elowen snorted. “Fine, don’t come back, and don’t bother calling me your mom anymore!”

She hung up without another word.

Zachary was stuck between the woman he loved and his own family. He grabbed Autumn’s hand, squeezed it tight, then let go.

Finally, he left her with one last desperate plea. “Autumn, just wait until I sort this out. Promise me you won’t fall for anyone else.”

He didn’t wait for an answer. He turned and bolted before she could respond.

After that day, Zachary never showed up again. Autumn figured he’d finally given up, and she’d just started to relax when Vanessa suddenly video called her out of nowhere.

“Autumn, what the hell did you

do?”

She looked absolutely furious. “Why won’t Zachary marry Kristen? Are you secretly throwing yourself at him again? You pulled the same crap years ago! If you hadn’t swooped in when he was vulnerable, Kristen never would’ve married that piece of trash just to spite him.

“Why are you so pathetic? Always trying to steal what belongs to Kristen. I should’ve never had you in the first place!”

Rebecca and Damon both looked at Autumn with genuine concern. They seemed shocked that such vicious words could come from her own mother.

Autumn was used to it by now. Her voice stayed completely calm. “Mom, do you actually think if you repeat a lie enough times it magically becomes true? The person who’s been stealing from me my whole life has always been Kristen. And you want to talk about three years ago? Do you really not know why Kristen married Tyler?

“I used to keep my mouth shut out of some misguided sense of family loyalty, but I don’t care about that anymore. You’re not going to manipulate me ever again.”

Vanessa didn’t expect Autumn to actually fight back, since she’d always been so easy to deal with. She froze for a second, then her anger exploded.

“Fine! Since you don’t give a damn about family, don’t bother coming back ever again! We

don’t need an ungrateful daughter like you!”

Three years ago, those same words would’ve had Autumn sobbing and blaming herself for being a terrible daughter. But hearing them now, she didn’t feel even a hint of guilt. She realized she just didn’t have any real family ties to these people.

“Mom, this is the last time I’m calling you that. I’ve already transferred all the money you spent raising me into your account. When you’re old, I’ll pay whatever the law says I owe you for elder care, but after that, let’s not contact each other anymore.”

Autumn ended the video call and immediately blocked Vanessa, who’d been blowing up her phone with messages. While she was at it, she blocked and deleted everyone else from the Reeves family too. She didn’t want anything to do with them anymore.

Even though Autumn looked totally calm on the outside, her trembling fingers and red- rimmed eyes gave away how much it hurt.

Damon had the sudden urge to pull her into his arms, but he clenched his fists hard and forced himself not to. He was scared of making her uncomfortable, but even more terrified she might push him away. Right now, he wanted to make her his more than he ever had before.

Rebecca sighed and walked over to wrap her arms around Autumn. “Hey, don’t be sad. You’ve still got me and Damon. They’re complete idiots for not appreciating you, and that’s on them. If you want, I can have someone teach Zachary and Kristen a lesson for causing all this crap.”

Autumn shook her head. “Forget it. It’s all in the

past now.”

Damon kept his head down and didn’t say anything.

Forget it? Autumn could let it go because she was kind and forgiving, but he couldn’t just stand by while someone he cared about got treated like garbage.

Every bit of pain she’d been through, every tear she’d cried, he was going to make them pay back with interest.
