Meanwhile, Zachary got the address from his assistant and immediately rushed to Southcrest. He’d bought Autumn’s favorite lychee roses and even won the bid on a pink diamond necklace called Eternal Heart that symbolized true love. He was ready to apologize properly and make things right.
But he never imagined he’d find another man with her.
When he finally arrived at the address, he walked right into a scene that made his blood boil.
Autumn was holding hands with some stranger, gazing into his eyes, and she wasn’t pulling away or resisting at all. She just looked shy and flustered.
The jealousy hit Zachary so hard that what little rationality he had left completely shattered.
He forced down his anger, but his voice came out ice cold. “Autumn, who is he? Why are you with him?”
Autumn whipped her head around at the familiar voice. Surprise flashed across her face for a split second before it turned cold and distant.
She knew Zachary had the wrong idea, but she wasn’t planning to explain anything.
“Zachary, we’re divorced. You don’t get to control what I do!”
“I never agreed to the divorce!” Zachary blurted out.
“Doesn’t matter. You still signed the papers yourself.”
Zachary took a deep breath and forced himself to stay calm. “Autumn, I didn’t understand my own feelings before. I know I hurt you, but that’s over now. Come home with me and we can start fresh,”
“Start fresh?” Autumn laughed. “Zachary, we’re done. There’s nothing left between us.”
“Maybe I wasn’t clear enough before, so let me say it again. I don’t love you anymore.”
Zachary refused to accept it. “I don’t believe you. There’s no way you just stopped loving me. You obviously…”
Autumn cut him off before he could finish. “It wasn’t sudden. I thought about it for a long time. You want to know something? We had a baby once, and I got rid of it.”

The news hit Zachary like a punch to the gut, and he froze. For once, his face, usually so calm and composed, showed genuine confusion and helplessness.
After a long silence, he finally managed to speak, his voice shaking. “Why would you abort our baby?”
“Remember the day you picked up Kristen from the airport and promised to help her get her memory back? I fell down that day and almost lost the pregnancy. When the doctor told me the baby was okay, I was so happy. I couldn’t wait to call you and tell you that you were going to be a father, but you didn’t pick up. Not once.”
Autumn smiled, her tone flat like she was talking about someone else’s life, but her clenched fists gave away how much it still hurt.
Zachary tried to explain, but the words wouldn’t come. His throat felt completely blocked.
Finally, he managed to whisper, “So you killed our baby to punish me?”
Autumn’s eyes went cold. “Punish you? My baby wasn’t some revenge plot. I just didn’t want that child to grow up like me, unwanted and unloved, born with some kind of curse hanging over them, desperate for any scrap of affection and willing to give up everything for it.”
Autumn shook her head with a sharp laugh. “Zachary, Kristen was pregnant back then too. You dropped everything to take care of her because you felt guilty. Eventually, you would’ve done the same thing to our child for hers.
“And honestly, I couldn’t promise I’d always love that baby either. I was scared that someday, I’d take all my anger at you out on an innocent kid. If that was going to happen, then I’d rather that baby never existed at all.”
Autumn knew what it felt like to be the unwanted child. Her mother had been pregnant with twins, a boy and a girl.
When they were born, Autumn survived but her brother died from malnutrition. To make it worse, her mother hemorrhaged during delivery and could never have more children.
Her parents blamed Autumn for stealing her brother’s nutrients and causing his death. They never hit her or anything, but they ignored her like she wasn’t even there.
Growing up, she’d watched her parents favor Kristen over her countless times, and every single time, it broke her heart. Living like that was exhausting.
Every word hit Zachary like a physical blow, and a sharp, spreading pain filled his chest.
After a long silence, his eyes reddened and his voice came out hurt and defensive. “But

Autumn, you never even asked me. How do you know I wouldn’t have wanted that baby? Why didn’t you give me a single chance before you just wrote me off completely?”
Autumn shot back, “Did I really not give you a chance?”
She wasn’t some professional actress. During those days waiting for the divorce to finalize, if Zachary had actually paid attention, he would’ve noticed something was wrong.
“I’m sorry. This is all my fault.” Zachary looked utterly defeated as he pleaded with her. “Autumn, please give me one more chance. Please?”
