The plane touched down in Southcrest, and Autumn spotted her friend Rebecca Moore waiting at the arrivals gate. They hadn’t seen each other in forever.

“Autumn, over here!” Rebecca started waving her arms like crazy the second she saw her.

Autumn smiled and called back, then jogged over with her suitcase.

Rebecca rushed to meet her, and her eyes were full of concern when she got close. “Why didn’t you come to me sooner when they were treating you like crap? Look how skinny you’ve gotten! I told you Zachary wasn’t right for you. If you’d just listened to me back then and not married him, you wouldn’t have had to go through all this.”

Someone cleared their throat and cut off Rebecca’s rambling. A tall guy stepped out from behind her and smoothly took Autumn’s suitcase.

Autumn blinked in surprise. “Sorry, who are you?”

“Oh my god, look at me!” Rebecca smacked her forehead. “I totally forgot to introduce you guys. This is my cousin, Damon Cross.”

Autumn gave

him a slightly awkward smile. “Hi, I’m Autumn.”

Damon could tell she felt uncomfortable, so he jumped in to ease the tension. “Nice to meet you. Rebecca talks about you all the time, and honestly, you’re even prettier in person than in your photos.”

“Thanks.” Autumn paused, then added carefully, “You’re pretty good-looking yourself.”

Damon couldn’t help but laugh at her awkward compliment.

Rebecca noticed they were hitting it off, and her eyes lit up with an idea. She offered to drive so the two of them could chat in the back, and she kept quiet the whole ride home.

Damon was really easy to talk to. Whatever topic Autumn brought up, he always had something to say about it, and she was surprised to find out they had basically the same interests. After just an hour of talking, he’d already made a really good impression on her.

The second Autumn got to the front door, Rebecca was waiting with a spray bottle of disinfectant. She started spraying Autumn down from head to toe while chanting, “Gotta get all your ex’s germs off you. Bad vibes, bad luck, all that toxic crap, gone. From now on, you’re getting nothing but good energy.”

Autumn didn’t know whether to laugh or cry, but she let her friend have her moment. When Rebecca finally finished, she grabbed Autumn’s hand and pulled her inside the apartment she’d set up in advance. Every detail, from the furniture layout to the little touches around the place, was exactly Autumn’s style.

Warmth spread through Autumn’s chest, and all the exhaustion from traveling just melted away. After she put her suitcase down, Rebecca cleared her throat and asked carefully, “So, Autumn, what do you think of Damon? I know Damon’s a year younger than you, but he’s a really good guy. Honest, great personality, and he’s never even had a girlfriend before, so there’s definitely no ex drama or anything like that.”

Autumn shook her head. “Rebecca, Damon sounds great, but I’m not ready to jump into another relationship right now.” She’d just gotten out of a failed marriage, and the last thing she wanted was to deal with all that complicated stuff again.

Rebecca could tell Autumn was hurting. “Hey, no pressure. You guys can just hang out as friends if you want. But listen, you can’t let one asshole make you give up on yourself, okay? You’re amazing, and eventually, you’re gonna meet someone who actually appreciates that. Zachary missing out on you? That’s his loss, not yours.”

Autumn hadn’t cried when she caught Zachary sneaking around with Kristen. She hadn’t cried when she lost the baby. She hadn’t even cried when they blamed her for everything and left her behind.

But right now, all the hurt and frustration she’d been bottling up came flooding out, and the tears just wouldn’t stop.

Rebecca didn’t say anything else. She just pulled Autumn into a hug and let her cry as hard as she needed to.

Time seemed to blur, but eventually, Autumn calmed down. That dark cloud that had been hanging over her for so long finally lifted, all thanks to having her friend there.
