Married at First Sight Chapter 1701
Mrs. Lewis continued, “Liberty, don’t pay attention to Duncan’s hurtful words; he is currently… He avoids seeing anyone because he feels like a hedgehog covered in thorns. People say those who visit him do so out of pity.”
“Mrs. Lewis, I won’t hold Mr. Lewis accountable,” Liberty replied softly, gently pulling her hand away. She wasn’t accustomed to such intimate gestures from Mrs. Lewis.
“Liberty, I came to speak with you today about something important,” Mrs. Lewis said straightforwardly, her eyes pleading. “We are all very concerned about Duncan, but we cannot persuade him to change. He cares for you deeply but has withdrawn from you recently. He struggles with low self-esteem, believes he is disabled, and doesn’t want to burden you, which is why he refuses to see you.”
Liberty listened silently, offering no response. After a moment of silence, Mrs. Lewis added, “I want to ask you to care for Duncan, help him regain his confidence, and support his rehabilitation after he leaves the hospital.” She believed that the best chance for Duncan’s recovery lay in Liberty’s involvement. If he continued to sink into depression, there was a real possibility he would be confined to a wheelchair for life.
“I understand you’re busy with your successful business, where you earn a substantial income daily. But don’t worry; I won’t let you suffer. I will offer you a salary of $10,000 a day. You would only need to work during the day and wouldn’t have to stay with him at night. What do you think?”
This offer was exceptionally generous. While Liberty’s all-you-can-eat business was thriving, it hadn’t reached the level of earning $10,000 a day. Mrs. Lewis believed that this amount would be a fair compensation for Liberty’s help.
was an appeal to Liberty to care for her son and help him regain his confidence.
“Regardless of your feelings towards Duncan, we will not interfere. That matter is between you and him. What I just shared is the truth: as long as my child is happy, it doesn’t matter whom he chooses to love. All I want is for him to live a joyful life.”
“Liberty, I understand that my request is difficult for you, but I feel I have no choice but to reach out.”
Mrs. Lewis grasped Liberty’s hand once more and pleaded, “Please help us. You are the only one who can support Duncan in standing back on his feet. If you think my offer is insufficient, please let me know what you would like, and I will meet your demands.”
After Mrs. Lewis finished speaking, Liberty replied, “Mrs. Lewis, I’m afraid I cannot assist you. Mr. Lewis has been very kind to me, and I feel sorry for him in his current state. I genuinely hope for his swift recovery. If there is a way I can help him, I would be more than willing, but it is not about emotions, and you don’t need to offer me such a high salary.”
Mrs. Lewis responded, “Duncan may come off as tough, but he has a soft heart, especially when it comes to you. As long as you are willing to care for him in the hospital, I assure you he will soften, and that won’t be an issue.”
“I have already dedicated so much time to taking care of Duncan, and I will definitely compensate you for your efforts. I understand your position; consider it a job with payment.”
If Liberty developed feelings for Duncan while caring for him, Mrs. Lewis would not object; if love did not blossom, she would respect Liberty’s choice.
Mrs. Lewis could only sigh, believing that the two were meant for each other. If Duncan chose not to marry because of this, she would accept it as well.
He was the son who lived, and he could pursue whatever he desired. Mrs. Lewis had to admit that Duncan was involved in a car accident this time; she genuinely turned away. The price she had to pay, however, felt rather steep.
