“I asked where you went. I’m in your office during working hours, but you’re neither in the office nor the building. Where have you gone? Don’t tell me you’ve gone to business meetings, as your secretary is still here.”

“Did you go looking for Liberty again? How many times must I tell you? Liberty is not suitable for you. She’s a divorced woman with a three-year-old child—a son. You may be willing to raise someone else’s son, but I refuse to be that child’s grandmother!”

Mrs. Lewis responded as she walked out, “That won’t be necessary.”

Nonetheless, the secretary still accompanied her to the elevator. He waited until Mrs. Lewis entered the elevator before leaving. Once she was gone, he quickly sent a message to Duncan.

“Mr. Lewis, your mother may be on her way to see you.”

Everyone at Lewis & Co. was aware that Duncan was pursuing Liberty. They were shocked and found it hard to believe, but it was indeed true. Some employees often visited All You Can Eat for breakfast, where they noticed that Liberty had successfully lost weight and looked much more attractive. Her pleasant demeanor only added to her appeal, and they didn’t find it surprising that Mr. Lewis had developed feelings for her.

Despite being divorced and having a three-year-old son, Liberty carried herself with the maturity of a married woman, which enhanced her charm. It was only natural that Mr. Lewis would fall in love after spending time with her.

After receiving his secretary’s message, Duncan mentally calculated how long it would take for his mother to arrive if she were on her way. To prevent his mother from voicing her harsh opinions in front of Liberty, he said to her just as his mother was about to arrive, “Liberty, I have some matters to attend to. I’ll leave now.”

Liberty understood what was happening. Ever since she had declined Mrs. Lewis’s request to leave Wiltspoon quietly with Sonny, Mrs. Lewis’s calls would come shortly after Duncan visited her. Occasionally, Mrs. Lewis would even come to see her in person. However, she remained polite and never insulted Liberty directly.

Still, Liberty was aware that Mrs. Lewis had likely said countless harsh things while Duncan was on the phone with her. She could infer the content of those conversations from Duncan’s gloomy demeanor. It usually revolved around how she was a divorced woman with a young son who didn’t deserve Duncan.

“Go ahead, Mr. Lewis,” Liberty said. She didn’t see Duncan off. After washing his hands, he left.

Duncan hugged Sonny before leaving with a sense of reluctance. After he departed, Liberty asked her son, “Sonny, should we consider moving to a different place?” They could relocate to an upscale neighborhood where access was limited to those with an entry pass or accompanied by residents. Liberty had the means to rent a house in such an area. This way, Duncan would not be able to visit her without her either escorting him or providing him with an entry pass. Ultimately, Liberty decided to make a break for it.
