Dalton observed Camryn for a moment before gently asking, “Camryn, is something bothering you?”
“No,” she replied immediately, denying it.
Dalton smiled and said, “We’ve known each other for over a decade, and you saved my life, so I know you better than anyone. If something is on your mind, please tell me. You said we’re like siblings.”
“As long as you share your thoughts, I’ll help you where I can, and if I can’t, I’ll find a way to assist you.”
After a brief silence, Camryn still denied it. “It’s nothing. I just feel that I owe Serenity a huge favor. This outcome was only possible because we relied on their influence.”
“It’s not accurate to say we borrowed their power. Mr. and Mrs. Newman’s actions simply incited widespread outrage, leading to a response from those far more powerful than us. Are you feeling unhappy because you’re dissatisfied with the outcome?”
“You shouldn’t feel any burden. You know Mrs. York, after all. That connection was purely coincidental, and she is kind-hearted and stands up to injustice. We didn’t exploit her, nor was your acquaintance with her premeditated.”
Camryn couldn’t have possibly schemed…
against Serenity.
Her encounter with Serenity and her connection with the Yorks were completely unexpected.
“If it weren’t for me, my mom wouldn’t have hated Serenity, and Liberty wouldn’t have been hurt. Thankfully, Liberty is okay now. Otherwise, I’d carry this guilt forever.”
Camryn felt responsible.
Though she never intended to involve others, she had inadvertently pulled many into the situation.
“Did they blame you?”
“No.”
Camryn believed the Hunt sisters were exceptionally kind people.
“Then that’s all that matters. They didn’t blame you, so you shouldn’t blame yourself or stress over it.”
Camryn remained silent.
“I heard that you and Mr. Callum go out together often. Do you like him?” As Dalton posed the question, he fixed his gaze on Camryn, anxious not to miss her reaction.
“There’s nothing between us. He introduced me to a significant business opportunity, so I invited him to dinner a few times.”
“Last night was Mr. Bucham’s engagement party, and you attended as Mr. Callum’s date.”
Dalton knew he shouldn’t pry too much, but he couldn’t help himself.
“Camryn, if you like Mr. Callum, let me know. I’ll help you.”
His heart ached slightly as he said this.
Still, he quickly shook off that feeling. Camryn had given him life, and she had always regarded him as a brother. Besides, he was currently in a stable relationship with his girlfriend.
Dalton could only be Camryn’s brother in this lifetime.
He couldn’t entertain any inappropriate thoughts, as that would jeopardize their friendship and kinship, and it would hurt his girlfriend.
“No, I don’t even know what he looks like. How could I like him?”
Camryn fervently denied it.
Dalton recognized she was not being truthful.
He chose not to press her.
Camryn had to admit that she harbored feelings for the second son of the York family. If she truly had no feelings for Callum, she wouldn’t have been so quick to deny it. Often, the more someone tries to refute something, the more it reveals their guilt.
The Yorks were the wealthiest family in Wiltspoon, known for their large and harmonious household and strong values. It was rumored that the men in the York family never divorced.
